He renounced all worldly possessions and fully upheld the Buddha’s teaching. When the bodhisattva known as ‘Light Surpassing the Moon’ arose, he became the teacher of all beings, and through melodious verses he asked the Tathāgata who was unknown to him how to attain the wisdom that cuts the root of all afflictions, comprehending it deeply. Later, as King ‘First Severance’, when many heretics questioned the causes and means of manifest realization, that king earnestly asked the stainless-eyed Tathāgata and fully understood. Again, as the brāhmaṇa named ‘Deep Examiner’, hearing the words “All conditioned things are impermanent; all phenomena cease,” he became disenchanted with all compounded realms, aspiring to seek the undying Dharma. He attained insight free from attachment and grasping, developed great compassion for all sentient beings, and mastered the conduct of non-clinging. Then, under the guidance of the Tathāgata ‘Stainless Wisdom-Eye’, when he became the bodhisattva known as ‘Lion Intelligence’, he followed the Buddha’s mind for one hundred and twenty-six thousand years and asked how to cease arising cognition; the Buddha gave instruction. Again, as the king named ‘Fear-Maker Guru’, he attained forbearance with respect to the unborn Dharma and sought the path of omniscient wisdom. He praised the Tathāgata ‘Excellent Thought and Insight,’ aroused the bodhicitta, and received full scriptural instruction. Again, as the king named ‘Renowned Exalted,’ seeking the definite path beyond saṃsāra, he praised the Tathāgata ‘Dharma Cloud Exalted Voice’ with metrical hymns, made requests, and fully understood the meaning. Again, as the minister named ‘Calm Thought,’ the king entrusted all affairs to his pure and discerning mind. He harmonized all disputes, pacified conflicts, and, knowing how to end every word of contention, ensured that the kingdom became fearless and serene.

All faults were eliminated, and great increase was accomplished, bringing benefit and happiness to self and others. Again, when the king’s son named “Flourishing” appeared, the Thus-Gone One cultivated virtue in the stainless flower and made prayers for unsurpassed enlightenment. Again, when hearing the voice that was not the dwelling of bodhisattvas, he generated special devotion and abided rightly, and at that time the Thus-Gone One caused the kingdom to be filled by the rain of the Dharma cloud, called “Abundant Kingdom,” living up to a hundred years. Although he upheld the Dharma, he did not obtain prophecy of unsurpassed enlightenment, because his mind was overly attached to bodhicitta. Again, when the Thus-Gone One was the teacher of Brahmā, called “Bodhisattva Possessing Wisdom,” at that time he realized the meaning of all sentient beings’ sensations, and by miraculous powers manifested all Buddha-fields, causing the beings therein to ripen completely into enlightenment. Through words, he proclaimed the Dharma, subduing all beings’ afflictions of desire, hatred, and delusion. Again, when the king’s daughter named “Beyond Count” appeared, she possessed supreme beauty. The king wished to seek marriage for her, but she refused, delighting instead in renouncing all household ties, dwelling in the Dharma of non-attachment. Again, when the king’s daughter became exceedingly beautiful, a brahmin named “Difficult-to-Endure,” ugly in appearance, came to request her. The king thought, ‘She will never accept this brahmin,’ and could not consent. Yet the daughter, to complete the perfection of giving and to fulfill the brahmin’s hope, agreed to be his wife, gave birth to a son, and later renounced to become ordained again. Again, when called “Manifesting All Causes,” there was one named “Thorough Investigation of Fundamental Giving,” who knew directly the minds of all worldly beings, teaching fundamental knowledge in towns and cities. Hence, it was called “Universal Great Bestowal.”

This kind of knowledge is not to be merely demonstrated, but must be realized within one’s own mind. When abiding in the monastery, by examining from where worldly knowledge arises, one realizes that the so-called “world” is nothing but the aggregation of the five skandhas. Knowing that these are born and perish and full of suffering, one then generates great compassion toward all beings, striving that they may attain complete liberation. Through diligence one attains the five clairvoyances, and beings are thus set upon this path. In former times, there was a ship captain called “Compassionate Leader,” skilled in methods. Together with five hundred merchants, he entered the ocean. To them he explained: within the ten directions, in countless realms, beings of various good and evil kinds exist in such manner. Thus, through his teaching of worldly knowledge, he benefited them. Again, in the past, there was a ship captain called “Loving Toward All,” who with five hundred merchants set out upon the sea. When the ship reached the mouth of the water spirits, it nearly sank. The merchants then made offerings and prayers to Brahmā, Īśvara, Skanda, the Nāga kings, and other deities, crying in distress. The captain said: “You rely upon a poor refuge, taking what is not a protector as a protector.” Just as in the past, through beauty beings were attracted, following after appearances. Seeing beauty, attachment arose, following the minds of beings and delighting them; showing the impure as impure, the pure as pure, producing manifold illusory manifestations to mature beings, yet not knowing their true nature. Thus all beings follow after karmic conditions, projecting mind upon them, pursuing them, without certainty and without reality. If one clings to purity, then one relies upon the sign of impurity. If one abandons signs and relies upon the signless, then liberation is attained. If one grasps permanence, one is bound; seeing impermanence, one is freed. Likewise, the notions of “self” and “non-self” are without inherent sign. Pleasure and pain alike must be examined and known. At that time, the Thus-Gone One appeared in the world, called “Destroyer of All Darkness,” and due to this occasion, the ship captain …
