When he was called the 'Universally Exalted One,' he taught the Dharma to beings who had strayed from the path. To reveal the faults of those attached to various beliefs, he perfectly demonstrated the correct way of cutting off clinging to false views, showing that one should not generate excessive attachment even to the Dharma itself or to one's own faith, but present it in accordance with its true nature. Thus, countless beings were liberated from suffering. The Bodhisattva named 'Holder of the Earth,' endowed with immeasurable qualities and sharp mastery, through generating mind after mind, gathered merit through countless eons; by such generation, he established innumerable beings in the three vehicles. When the Thus-Gone One poured down Dharma like rain from the clouds, those beings were taught according to their individual aspirations. The Bodhisattva named 'Holder of Jewels,' in the retinue of the Thus-Gone One called 'Near Tranquil Exalted,' was aligned in mind and accomplished the five clairvoyances, thus surpassing worldly cognition. Having obtained faith in that Buddha, knowledge of the manifold realms, and harmony with his teaching, he engaged in deeds in accord with the Buddha's activity. The Bodhisattva named 'Water Deva,' dwelling at home, requested the Thus-Gone One 'Beautiful Vision' for a path to cut off various wrong attachments, and thereafter fully knew all domains without any fault arising. The Bodhisattva named 'Stainless Moon,' during the age when the Thus-Gone One 'Skillful in Liberating All into Enlightenment' remained for countless eons, established innumerable beings only in the Great Vehicle, irreversible until they attained liberation from samsara. Thereupon, the Bodhisattva 'Divine Moon' placed beings as numerous as the fine particles in ten Buddha-lands into unsurpassed enlightenment and liberated them from samsara. At that time, the Bodhisattva 'Stainless Moon,' seeing the Bodhisattva 'Divine Moon' thus bringing countless beings to maturation in unsurpassed enlightenment and perfectly expanding the Buddha's lineage, thought: 'I too shall train following after him.'

Then he manifested according to the minds and faiths of all beings in the ten directions of the world, taking forms such as gods, nāgas, yakṣas, and others. In that land, he caused all sentient beings, depending on their duration, to mature in the three vehicles. By the power of that root of virtue, all beings obtained various kinds of faith and understanding. Again, when he became known as the Bodhisattva ‘Unrivaled in Strength,’ he served as an attendant to the Thus-Gone One, the Buddha King of Medicine, mastering meaning, Dharma, time, beings, and all teachings, having gone to the other shore. By asking the Thus-Gone One about knowledge of the faculties, and receiving the teaching, he attained the forbearance of the unborn Dharma. Again, when he became known as the god Brahmin King, he reflected on the deeds he had done, and thought: “What karmas have I accumulated apart from the teaching of virtue and non-virtue given in the scriptures?” Thus he came to know that wholesome deeds lead to results, and discerned by which conditions deeds manifest. If desire or other afflictions arose, he distinguished them as great, middling, or small, and subdued them. Thus he did not fall into the cycle of rebirth for eighty kalpas. Again, when he became the daughter of the Moon God King, known as the Moon Goddess, she was wise and single-minded, attending to the king’s affairs and supporting the royal governance. Then the Moon God King asked his daughter: “By what cause can one attain the perfect knowledge of the arising of all faculties?” The daughter replied: “If one serves and honors monks and disciplined Brahmins, and those who have heard much, then it will be accomplished. That knowledge will be fully gained and one will be able to teach it to others.” Thus, the king, rejoicing and delighted, served the ascetics and Brahmins, and obtained unshakable faith. Again, when he became the sage ‘Kauṇḍinya, Possessor of the Five Superknowledges,’ practicing austerities in the forest, he thought: “By what wisdom are the faculties stopped, so that they no longer arise?” He thought: “The noble knowledge fully realizes the stopping of faculties. The cessation of faculties means non-arising. Just as, for example, when a man’s head is cut off, it never grows back, likewise, when the faculties are stopped, they no longer arise—this is the knowledge of the cessation of faculties.”
