Thinking thus, if one wishes to fully understand the faculties with such wisdom, yet the wisdom of the faculties is not attained. In order to seek such wisdom, one goes to the Samanas and Brahmanas, to those places where there is little activity, and asks, but does not attain it. One generates wisdom oneself, thinking that one should seek it. One gives up immeasurable things that are difficult to give up, and even if one gives up one's head and eyes, one does not attain that wisdom. Having sought with such difficulty, one attains that wisdom in the Noble Path. Furthermore, for the sake of such wisdom, one gives up immeasurable things such as riding elephants, horses, chariots, and walking, and accumulates immeasurable roots of virtue. If those roots of virtue had form, then even the sands of the Ganges River in the world could not contain them, so it is said. Moreover, in the past, when one was born as a sage named Pure Intellect, all the afflictions that arose were transformed into the perception of impurity, and one quickly abandoned and discarded them. Before long, one became extremely unaccustomed to all afflictions, and dwelt in a state of purity and liberation. All beings, including the gods, were also devoted to him. He led all beings with the wisdom that he himself should attain, and after death, he was born in the Brahma realm. Moreover, when one was born as a sage named Giver of the Path, one abandoned the earth up to the edge of the ocean, and went forth to the borderlands. Under a tree, one contemplates, "Thus, this tree will soon fall to the ground. Thus, all accumulations come to an end, and the high fall. What method is there to prevent falling?" And although there is no such method, that which does not rise does not fall. And one rises with pride; if there is no pride, there is no rising. Thinking thus, in order to abandon pride, one teaches the Dharma, and with a compassionate heart, one truly teaches others to practice the ten virtuous actions, so they are born in the Brahma realm. Moreover, the sage named Extreme Guide, through the path of the outsiders, attained the five supernormal powers. Observing these sentient beings, what is the cause of being born into various lineages? One knows that afflictions give rise to karma,
