Just as relying upon a raft one crosses to the further shore and then abandons the raft, likewise, having attained perfect enlightenment and knowing the path that leads to the other shore, one should relinquish the grasping discriminative mind. In the manner of non-doing, one observes that all dharmas are devoid of essence, seeing all dharmas as like a raft, empty and insubstantial. Realizing thus and teaching accordingly is done for the benefit of innumerable sentient beings. In the same way, in order to understand the origin of worldly defilements, one examines with proper reasoning. The sages, having arisen on the correct path, sometimes delight in worldly existence or are born in many forms to pacify worldly afflictions. Yet by cultivating the wisdom of the true path, they do not turn back, as spoken in the Sutra of Expanded Wisdom. Moreover, in former times there was a sage called ‘Knower’. At that time he had perfected all skillful means, attained great miraculous powers and radiance, and by the path of outsiders became free from desire. His life lasted ninety thousand years. At the age of eighty thousand, he had not coughed, not fallen unconscious, not slept in delusion, and he thought: ‘From where do these sufferings arise?’ He realized: not from others, but from the power of ignorance. Because of ignorance, samsara continues unceasingly. If one knows and sees, then samsara can be reversed. Thus reflecting correctly, in front of eighty crores of devas of the Pure Abodes, manifesting in the intermediate heavens, he proclaimed three times: ‘Ah! Lion, Lion, great and fearless! Beings like lions have no fear! The lion contemplates fully with thought! The guide becomes the lion!’ Those devas, seeing this manifestation, heard his words thrice repeated. The fearless lion roared loudly, and the eighty crores of devas folded their hands and worshipped. In all the Buddha fields of the ten directions, innumerable, measureless, these arose in your mind’s perception. You have purified all Buddha fields. The great elephant guide, supremely wise, pure and difficult to approach. You are the guide of all beings, with two feet supreme and perfected. Just as the Buddhas of the past, all attained Buddhahood for the sake of guiding beings. Since the task of guiding beings is complete in you, the supreme person is truly a Buddha.

Attaining the earth. At that time, abiding in equanimous mind, he thought: ‘What kind of vision is this that appears?’ Then the pure celestial beings said: ‘Friend, your vision has manifested the inexpressible Buddha-fields of the Buddhas of the ten directions.’ Hearing this, through the power of virtue thus gained, he ascended into the sky through seven palaces, and in the worlds of the ten directions he saw some Buddhas descending from the Tusita heaven, some taking their first steps, some attaining perfect awakening, some turning the Dharma wheel, and some demonstrating final nirvana without remainder. He also saw the Buddhas teaching Dharma, and he heard the pure gods say: ‘Friend, because in former cycles we did not earnestly make supplications, our minds fell into discouragement and abandoned the serenity of enlightenment. Now, for the sake of supreme enlightenment, we entrust this responsibility to you.’ Thus they spoke in verses. By the touch of that vision, he placed his mind upon countless sentient beings, vowing never to turn back. Again, when he was called ‘the White Sage,’ he obtained the samādhi endowed with all virtuous dharmas. He reflected: ‘Whatever bodhisattva practice one trains in, from this samādhi it will definitely arise.’ He further obtained the samādhi of non-doing, realizing that all phenomena are free from actions, not being products of deeds. Reflecting thus: all dharmas are originally free from activity, not created. Rising from that meditation, he traveled in the world, teaching the Dharma of non-arising, by which countless beings attained the tolerance of the unborn Dharma. Again, when he was called ‘the Sage of Unhindered Wisdom,’ he attained the samādhi called ‘All dharmas lack inherent characteristics,’ and also the samādhi called ‘All dharmas are devoid of essence.’ Through these samādhis, for twenty-four kalpas he cultivated the miraculous power of spiritual feet, wandered in innumerable inconceivable Buddha-fields, and attained particles as subtle as the finest dust. He also attained the samādhi of ‘Not believing and not seeing the true nature of dharmas,’ abiding therein for many eons.

Through the teachings of nectar, countless beings were established in the tolerance of non-origination. Furthermore, a sage named "Seeing Without Obscurations" became powerful with detachment, miraculous abilities, and great strength through the path of outsiders. He went to a secluded place and contemplated: "What is Dharma? What is obscuration?" He thought, "There is no Dharma, and there is no obscuration of Dharma. Why? Because all Dharmas are devoid of inherent nature, just as the sky does not obscure the sky, because the sky has no inherent nature." He arose from that samadhi and proclaimed, "Friends, because all Dharmas are devoid of inherent nature, no Dharma obscures any Dharma." Thus, the sound that all Dharmas are devoid of inherent nature spread unimpeded in all directions. Countless beings heard this sound and attained the samadhi of all Dharmas being devoid of inherent nature, and they obtained the tolerance of non-origination. Furthermore, in a past life, when the Tathagata named "Maker of Bliss" appeared in the land of a king who had conquered his enemies, among the retinue of Bodhisattvas, the Bhagavan himself manifested as a Bodhisattva named "Possessing the Power of Faith," who praised the Mahayana. There, those of the Hearer Vehicle, unwilling to remain long in samsara, argued with the Mahayanists, saying, "Who would enjoy this beginningless cycle of existence?" The Mahayanists said, "Venerable ones, do you know the long-standing suffering created in the past?" They replied, "We do not know." He said, "When do you fear when you obtain complete enjoyment? You contemplate what has not been done, but not what has been done. Venerable ones, abandoning what has been done and contemplating what has not been done is fear. One who contemplates what has been done and not what has not been done thinks, 'I have done much.' Contemplating what has been done, there is no fear. Venerable ones, I understand the meaning of what the Bhagavan has said in this way: one should thoroughly examine what has been done."
