In this way, within the land of Bhadra, seven times the transcendent state was fully manifested. The unobstructed Dharma is realized subsequently. This is the realm of practice of all the Buddhas, entering the realms where the Buddhas of the past have abided, and understanding the Dharma of the Dharma-Kings. All these Dharmas are like space, for the nature of Dharma has no object to be known. To know the nature of Dharma is to realize that Dharma has no inherent essence. All these Dharmas are unchanging, without duality, thus the verses declare. Accordingly, that king, though never hearing it elsewhere, attained forbearance toward the unborn Dharma through his own mind. The Blessed One proclaimed: “O son of Magadha! Whether a son or daughter of noble lineage, if they aspire to complete unsurpassed perfect awakening, then whether or not they encounter a Buddha, they must practice yoga to fully realize and comprehend the profound Dharma.” Thus the Tathāgata spoke. Moreover, in former times, there was a king named Stainless Bestower of Power, who became a Dharma King possessing the seven precious treasures. At that time, the king inquired of his ministers and monks, investigating the Dharma. Then, the Tathāgata, the Stainless-Eyed One, appeared in the world. The king, accompanied by eight hundred million beings, a thousand ministers, and eight hundred million women, went before the Buddha. The Tathāgata taught Dharma to innumerable beings, and all listened attentively in silence. The king recalled the roots of virtue he had previously accumulated and, amidst the women, abided in the equanimity of the fourth meditation. Upon seeing the Tathāgata, he felt unparalleled joy and faith, thinking: “This assembly of the Tathāgata is inconceivable, none can surpass it; the path they tread is serene, endowed with uncommon wisdom.” The Tathāgata then approached the king and spoke: “To see the Tathāgata brings great benefit.” Having spoken thus, the king and his retinue bowed to the Tathāgata and sat down. At that moment, eight hundred thousand gods of the Thirty-Three Heaven also appeared in the sky and arranged their seats.

If the gods of desire cannot behold him, how then could ordinary humans? Yet, by the Buddha’s miraculous power, he caused the gods of the desire realm to be visible to humans. The king then thought: even if all the desire gods came to oppose, none could prevail against this Tathāgata. All the desire gods joined their palms and sat. The king too joined palms, bowed, praised with verses, and made requests. The Tathāgata replied, and the king rejoiced greatly. Through this virtuous root of lofty praise, for countless eighty kalpas he never fell into lower realms, and he obtained merits such as beautiful eyes, wisdom, knowledge, and miraculous powers. Again, in the past there was a Tathāgata called ‘King Nyagrodha,’ vast and pure. The beings of his realm lived for eighty-four thousand years. At that time, the Blessed One was still a Bodhisattva named ‘Transcending Dual Thoughts,’ who ruled that land as king. He had eighty thousand women in his harem and a thousand ministers. The king thought: I shall use the royal treasury to enrich the destitute; I shall keep pure precepts with an undefiled mind; I shall not follow the three poisons, nor be overpowered by sleep or torpor, but abide in mindfulness and vigilance. With loving-kindness, compassion, and the Bodhi-mind, entering meditation, attaining the infinite, and dwelling amidst wisdom and omniscience. Then, a god with former karmic ties urged him to approach the Tathāgata. Gathering his retinue, he went. The Buddha, seeing him, adorned his path with divine ornaments, and the gods were instructed to honor him. The king, beholding this wonder, asked his ministers: ‘What is this?’ They, recalling the god’s words, replied: ‘This is the procession of the world’s great protector. Out of compassion for you, the Buddha has manifested this.’ The king then descended from his chariot, joined palms, and paid homage.

By the practice of the earth-conduct, homage was paid to the Blessed One. The Buddha, seeing this, also uttered verses of praise and then relinquished the steps toward his direction. At that time, the pure celestial beings manifested eighty arrays of robes and parasols to offer to the Blessed One. The king, beholding this, wondered, 'From where did these come?' But perceiving them not, he thought they had gone elsewhere. Then the deities spoke to the king in verse: 'The coming, going, birth and cessation have no obstruction.' Thus the king understood the meaning and was freed from doubt. Again, in a previous time, the Blessed One himself was a king named Peak-Wisdom. At that time, there was another king named Great-Fame, who, abandoning the outer paths, possessed miraculous powers and great splendor. On the fifteenth day, he went to the assembly hall of the Thirty-Three Gods and discussed Dharma with the gods. The companions said: 'When the Blessed One arises in the world, he will surely turn the wheel of Dharma.' Then King Peak-Wisdom, together with All-Pervading Wisdom, Star-Radiance, and ninety-nine thousand other kings, also went to the hall of the Thirty-Three Gods to engage in Dharma discourse. The companions said: 'One should align with those who speak Dharma, not with those who speak non-Dharma. One should align with right speech, with peace, with truth, with the teaching of emptiness, and with the teaching of non-self, not with their opposites. The Buddhas only speak of emptiness; they do not speak of self.' The companions further said: 'The Blessed One taught that the twelve sense-fields, inner and outer, are devoid of essence.' From this discourse, many gods asked aloud: 'If all is emptiness, how then does there arise aggregation? If there is no self and no possessions of self, by what means is there gathering and birth?' Then other gods replied: 'Do not disparage the Buddha’s teaching. With the arising of five signs, the death and rebirth of gods are manifest before your eyes. Seeing the lord of gods die is direct proof of non-self.'
