"All dharmas are without self; to transcend suffering is peace." — Uttering this voice, I caused it to resound through the ten directions. Those who heard it, clinging to self, turned toward selflessness. Those who declared selflessness, had already engaged in the practice. All such manifestations arose from the wisdom power of the Peacock King. Thus the king incorporated all into the Dharma, just as in the past he had offered reverence to countless Buddhas' thrones. With compassion for all beings, he released this voice, making the great three-thousand worlds hear it, thereby revealing the Dharma. Therefore, bodhisattvas-mahāsattvas, in the teaching of the Tathāgata, the Blessed One, proclaim the lion’s roar with fearless wisdom. — So it was spoken. Long ago, in the city of Grass-Supreme, the Tathāgata called ‘Supreme Joy’ appeared. At that time this world was vast and blissful. That Buddha lived immeasurable lifespans, and passed into nirvāṇa between the śāla trees. His sacred Dharma remained in the world for more than four hundred thousand years. Then there was a monk named Guṇa-buddhi (Virtue and Wisdom), who upheld discipline with utmost rigor, whose lion’s roar resounded, teaching the Ninefold Scriptures. He admonished the monks, forbidding them to accept slaves, cattle, and sheep, which were not proper Dharma possessions. Yet many monks broke the precepts, gave rise to anger, seized weapons, and attempted to kill him. At that time, the Blessed One himself manifested as the king of that land, called Guṇavān (Virtuous), and upon hearing this matter, immediately went to the Dharma-preacher, reconciling the precept-keepers and the violators, and rescued the preacher safely. The king’s body, though struck with swords and spears, was unharmed. The monk Guṇa-buddhi then said: “Excellent, O King! You now guard the true Dharma. In future times, you will become a vessel of measureless Dharma.” — Thus it was spoken.

Then, having heard the Dharma there, with a mind filled with joy, after passing away, in the Buddha-field of the Immovable Tathagata, he became the supreme attendant of that Buddha. The retinue of that king, having entered the battle and triumphed, all who rejoiced and praised, became irreversible in their Bodhicitta, and after passing away, were born in the Buddha-field of the Immovable Tathagata. The Bhikshu Guna-mati also later passed away and was born in the Immovable Buddha-field, becoming the lowest among the Sangha of Shravakas. Therefore, when the sacred Dharma is declining and nearing its end, it should be protected and rescued in this way, as it was said, that Dharma speaker was the Buddha Kashyapa. Again, in the past, countless immeasurable eons ago, when the Buddha, the Bhagavan, the Supreme Victorious One, appeared in the world and taught the Sutra of Nirvana, this Bhagavan himself was a Shravaka of that Buddha, holding this Sutra and teaching it to others. Since then, he has never fallen into the lower realms, nor abandoned the true Dharma, nor experienced an evil body or suffering from diseases, etc. Now, the Tathagata is also free from all diseases and without fear, so it is said. Again, in a previous life, when the Bhagavan himself was the Brahmin boy named Star, he practiced Brahmacharya for forty-two thousand years, and upon entering the magnificent palace of the king, a merchant's daughter saw the boy, who was handsome and pleasing to the eye. She touched his feet and asked, "What do you desire?" The girl replied, "I desire you." The Brahmin boy said, "I am not one who seeks pleasure, but one who practices Brahmacharya." The girl said, "If you do not live with me, I will die." The boy thought, "I have practiced Brahmacharya for forty-two thousand years, this is not my way." So, he abandoned the girl with his power and took seven steps. As he stood on the seventh step, compassion arose, and he thought, "Even if I destroy my ascetic practice and fall into hell, I will endure it, so that this girl will not be afraid at the time of happiness and death." So, he returned to the girl.

seized from her hand, saying, "Daughter, come, I will do whatever you wish." He stayed in her house for twelve years. Later, she manifested, generated the four Brahmaviharas, and was born in the Brahma world. Thus, by generating the mind of great compassion, he overturned and abandoned forty thousand kalpas of samsara. The Buddha said, "The karma of other beings that would cause them to be born in hell, the Bodhisattva skillfully causes them to be born in the Brahma world, just like that." Also, in the past, before the Buddha Dipankara, there were about five hundred merchants desiring wealth who entered the ocean. Having accomplished their purpose on the sea, they set out to return. Among them, there was a black man who lived by evil, learning illusion, a robber, who thought, "I will kill all the merchants and take their wealth." Among them, this Bhagavan himself was transformed into a captain named Great Compassion, who was prophesied by the sea god in a dream: "Among these guests, there is a person with such and such appearance and characteristics, who intends to kill all the merchants and rob their wealth. All these five hundred merchants are Bodhisattvas who will not turn back from unexcelled perfect enlightenment. If they are killed, then this person, because each Bodhisattva has strived for unexcelled perfect enlightenment for a long time, will be burned in the great hells for the same long time. Therefore, captain, be skillful so that the five hundred merchants are not killed, and this person does not fall into the great hells." The captain pondered over this method and knew that there was no other way than to kill this person. If he told the merchants about this, they would kill this person with hatred, and then they would all fall into hell. Even if I kill this person, I would be willing to be burned in the great hells for hundreds of thousands of kalpas. If these five hundred merchants were to die, this person would accumulate such great evil karma, which is not right. This person I will kil
