Thinking that it should be done this way, in order to protect the five hundred merchants and that person, he seized the black man's short spear and killed him by stabbing him. Those five hundred merchants were the five hundred Bodhisattvas of this Fortunate Aeon. With great compassion and skillful means, he reversed the cycle of the Bum Aeon, and that black man was also reborn in the heavenly realm after death. Later, when he became a Buddha, although the Tathagata's body was as hard as a diamond, due to the necessity of skillful means, he showed the appearance of a thorn piercing the sole of his foot. The Tathagata knew that the twenty people who were to be reborn as the last existence and their twenty enemies were thinking of using tricks to pretend to be friendly, entering his house to kill him. Therefore, in order to subdue them, he said to Maudgalyāyana's son: "From this direction, a thorn will grow, and it will pierce the sole of the Tathagata's right foot." Soon after speaking, a sharp thorn about a span high grew. At that time, the great Maudgalyāyana requested, "I will throw this thorn into another world." The Buddha said, "It cannot be discarded from this direction." Even if the great Maudgalyāyana used all his strength to grab the thorn, the three thousand great thousand worlds tilted upwards and shook violently, but that thorn did not move even a hair's breadth. Afterwards, the Tathagata went to the assembly of the Four Great Kings with his supernatural power, and that thorn also came to the assembly of the Four Great Kings. Similarly, he also went to the Thirty-three Heavens, the Heaven of Non-Contention, the Tushita Heaven, the Heaven of Delightful Transformation, the Heaven of Free Control of Others, and even to the Brahma world, and that thorn also came to the Brahma world. Afterwards, the Tathagata descended from the Brahma world and sat on the cushion, and that thorn also descended from the Brahma world and stayed in front of the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One...

Then, with his right hand grasping his right foot, he placed it upon the peak of the Lion’s Roar grove. One foot remained upright, resting upon it. Immediately, the great thousandfold world system of three thousand worlds quaked intensely. At that time, Venerable Ānanda asked the Blessed One: ‘Revered One, what past karma did you perform that has ripened into such a result now?’ The Blessed One replied: ‘In the past, within the ocean, I was a merchant holding a short spear in my left hand. I killed beings, though not exhausting the residual effects. There were twenty companions who desired to kill together; later those same twenty were transformed into disciples of the Dharma. If that karma had fully ripened, it would have led to suffering, yet I feared you might have doubts. Once, I killed living beings with my own hand, but later I confessed before the Blessed Ones. Through confession, those karmas were exhausted; instead, I used them as conditions to begin teaching the Dharma, and thus those twenty attained manifest wisdom. Furthermore, forty thousand other beings also realized the Dharma. Likewise, in another time, a sick king offered medicine to the Buddha; returning home empty-handed, he washed and came back. A Brahmin woman full of contempt slandered me. A maiden called ‘All-ornamented Beauty’ treated me with disdain. In the royal garden, I was abandoned as though imprisoned. For three months, I was offered rotten horse fodder. My body was compared to a corpse as a means of teaching. The Śākya clan, frightened, said, “My head is breaking.” A Brahmin named Bhāradvāja held a grand gathering and excluded me. All gods and humans followed me, causing me to beg without food, being pursued in hunger. An elephant king attacked me. Robbers and thieves pressed upon me. A hail of stones fell upon me. All these ten kinds of karmic effects are not real stains of the Tathāgata but only skillful means, for the purpose of liberating countless beings, thus I manifested these appearances and spoke in this way.’

By the power of that Dharma teaching, there exists a great purpose of taming beings, as declared in the Sutra of Great Secret Skillful Means. In former times, when the Buddha ‘Radiant Protector’ (Odsrung) taught the Dharma, the Blessed One himself took the form of a Brahmin youth named ‘Garland of Rays’ (Odzerteng). At that time, there were five Brahmin ascetics, like great sāla trees, who had previously entered the Bodhisattva Vehicle correctly, but by meeting with wicked companions, they forgot the mind of awakening and practiced the austerities of heretics, losing faith in the Buddha. In order to tame them, the one skilled in means manifested as the ascetic named ‘Pot-maker’ (Bumjé), who became a companion of Garland of Rays. A faithful follower then, together with Garland of Rays and the five Brahmins, spoke praises of the Buddha Radiant Protector, saying: “Brahmin youth Garland of Rays, come here, let us go before the Tathāgata.” Garland of Rays replied: “I myself have proclaimed the praises of the Buddha, not the mantras of heretics. If I utter such things, doubts will arise, and I shall not be able to go before the Buddha Radiant Protector.” Therefore, the one skilled in means, in accord with the perfection of wisdom, reflected on the fact that the Buddha and enlightenment were not truly perceived, and spoke: “O monk Head-touch, what shall I do, having seen me? Enlightenment is supremely hard to obtain; where is enlightenment at monk Head-touch?” Thus he spoke. Again, at another time, when Garland of Rays and the five Brahmin ascetics were sitting by the riverside, the Buddha, by his miraculous power, in order to tame them, sent the ascetic Pot-maker to the riverside to urge them: “The Buddha is extremely hard to find; you should go before him.” Garland of Rays, as before, answered, holding to his reluctance. Then Pot-maker seized Garland of Rays by the hair-knot and led him before the Buddha Radiant Protector, thinking, “This Buddha and his Dharma must indeed be something extraordinary.” The five Brahmin youths also followed behind him...
