They once approached before the eyes of the Buddha. Having beheld the Tathāgata, the Buddha Radiant Protector, and being immediately stirred by their former virtuous roots, they gained faith and addressed the Brahmin youth Radiant Garland: “Since the Teacher possesses such marvelous qualities, why did you not tell me earlier?” and they smiled. Thereupon, the five Brahmin clans, having heard the majesty, courage, and pure voice of the Buddha, aroused supreme Bodhicitta with profound reflection. The Buddha Radiant Protector, having understood their noble intent, then revealed to them the Dharma treasury of the Bodhisattvas: the indestructible dhāraṇī-wheel of irreversible Dharma, proclaiming perfectly: “All phenomena are unborn.” Thus the five Brahmins attained the forbearance toward the unborn Dharma. At that time, the Buddha Radiant Protector instructed the five sons: “If the youth Radiant Garland had from the beginning spoken the praises of the Buddha, and not the praises of false paths, then even without the chance to come before the Buddha in person, you would still have gained faith—what more needs be said?” Thus it was declared for the sake of great irreversible Bodhisattvas, who harbor not the slightest doubt toward Buddha or Bodhi, but who skillfully act for the maturation of sentient beings. Just as, by the karmic result of the monk Mahākāśyapa’s question ‘Where is Bodhi?’, six years of ascetic hardship were shown; and just as, for the ignorant beings who secretly utter harsh words against those endowed with morality, long-term harm and downfall would ensue—the Buddha, to demonstrate karmic law, expounded in gentle speech. But for the Bodhisattva himself, there is no actual karmic obscuration at all. Likewise, when harsh words are spoken against a virtuous one, leading him to regret and discouragement, the Buddha skillfully teaches to dispel such remorse. Even if a beginner Bodhisattva errs, in the sublime Dharma of the Tathāgata Radiant Protector, even harsh words spoken may still become causes for liberation. How much more so for us ignorant beings—needless to say, such sin too shall eventually be extinguished.

For the sake of arousing the mind of vow, it is spoken thus. Then, the Brahmin youth Radiant Garland of Light, having cultivated and matured himself through the five sciences, went forth into homelessness and fully entered into the teaching of the Thus-Gone One, Protector of Light. He became the holder of the Dharma treasury of the Buddha, known as the Brahmin youth Wisdom Guru. This very Wisdom Guru, son of the Brahmin Light Protector, after my passing, will without delay attain Buddhahood as the Thus-Gone One named Shakyamuni. Such a prophecy was declared. In this way it is shown that through countless former lives, regarding all objects of knowledge however vast, his mind remained unstained in clarity, trained higher and higher, until finally attaining the great pristine wisdom that completely purifies the imprints and stains of the two obscurations, directly perceiving all phenomena of knowledge, and thereby attaining the wisdom of omniscience. Through this attainment, he directly sees the conventional and ultimate nature of all knowables encompassed within the three times and ten directions, as clearly as a wish-fulfilling jewel in the palm of the hand. By this, he possesses the ten powers and great might, endowed with the dominion of the ten masteries, becoming the Blessed Buddha, honored by gods and humans, unrivaled, roaring the lion’s roar, exalted in celestial realms, conqueror of the hosts of Māras, the supreme refuge and protector of all beings, having attained the eternal, all-pervasive wisdom body, the great sovereign of all virtues. As stated in the Sūtra of the Expansive Wisdom of the Thus-Gone One: ‘Blessed One, the wisdom of the Buddha is immeasurable, vast, and wondrous.’ Likewise, the son of Moun Opposer, undertaking thorough investigation and analysis, through close examination saw that in the ten directions, within Buddha-fields as numerous as particles of dust, there were beings all gathered without before or after, and in each Buddha’s presence, they all became disciples. To each mouth appeared a tongue, and from each tongue unceasingly issued praises of the Buddha’s wisdom, without ever reaching an end. Why is this so? Because that son of Moun Opposer was empowered by the wisdom of the Thus-Gone One.

The ground is endowed with the inconceivable, endowed with wisdom beyond measure, endowed with wisdom beyond number, endowed with wisdom unreachable by thought, endowed with wisdom incomparable, endowed with wisdom immeasurable. The perfect Buddha is endowed with wisdom beyond words. This should be understood as such; this is the section on wisdom. Our teacher, the Blessed One, at the very beginning of generating the supreme bodhicitta, as stated in the *Sutra on Removing the Regret of Unarisen Enemies*, countless immeasurable eons ago, when the Tathāgata called 'Banner of the Unconquerable' appeared in the world, in that teaching there was a Dharma speaker named 'Wisdom King,' a youth called Manjuśrī, who entered the great and magnificent royal palace 'Vastly Adorned,' making offerings and filling it with treasures. The Blessed One then manifested as the son of a merchant named 'Stainless Hero,' sitting on his mother's lap. A monk, seeing him, approached for alms; the mother gave a lump of food, and the monk took it to the Tathāgata. The monk let the child personally offer it to the Tathāgata and the assembly. After the Buddha and the retinue accepted the offering, the monk guided the child to take refuge, accept precepts, and arouse the mind of enlightenment. When the parents came searching for the child, together with him and five hundred beings, they all generated bodhicitta. The Blessed One said this was the first arising of bodhicitta. Likewise, in the *Sutra of Cutting Off All Deviant Paths*, during the time of 'Radiant Tathāgata,' a bodhisattva named 'Maitreya' became a universal monarch and generated bodhicitta. After thirty-four eons, I, the Blessed One, also generated bodhicitta under that 'Banner of the Unconquerable' Tathāgata, making offerings for a thousand years with all enjoyable requisites.
