The question was asked: “What truly is the ‘self’?”—Wherever we may gather, we cannot be liberated by clinging to the so-called ‘son of the gods’. Even in the first heaven, I do not see a ‘self’; likewise, from the second up to the fifth heaven, I do not see a ‘self’. A ‘self’ that wishes not to die is not to be found; in death and among the dead, the ‘self’ is not to be found. Here, there is no ‘self’ and no ‘mine’; all phenomena are void of self and of what is ‘mine’. Thus did the Blessed Buddha speak in truth. Then, King Bird-Intellect spoke to the ninety-nine kings, saying: “Gather together as one! Alas! These heavenly hosts are not in harmony; they neither know nor realize the Teaching of the Thus-Come One. We should go to the human continent to spread the Dharma. If all dharmas are not empty, and clinging only to ‘self and what is mine’, wishing to debate Dharma in the assembly hall of the gods, then these hosts will only regress and fall into doubt concerning the Buddha’s Teaching. Therefore, let us go to the human world to discuss the Dharma.” Then the hosts gathered together in one place and spoke to King Bird-Intellect: “You were born in the central land, not in the border regions. You truly understand the manifest Dharma.” King Bird-Intellect then said to the kings of the directions: “You twenty-five kings of the East, likewise the twenty-five of the South, the West, and the North—who are wise, skilled, discerning, not shallow, not speculative, free from error, free from delusion, free from bias, able to open the continuity of mind—should assemble in one place! Follow the command of these hundred kings.” Thus the hundred kings followed. King Bird-Intellect together with the hundred kings rose into the sky by miraculous power and went to the King of the Snowy Mountains (the Himalayas). Their retinues transformed into divine kings and all came. There, in the central land, King Bird-Intellect manifested a throne made of the seven precious substances. King Bird-Intellect paid homage to the ten directions and sat upon the throne. The one hundred ninety-nine kings bowed at his feet and sat encircling him. Three...

The deities of the Three Roots, joyful and delighted, abided freely in the Blissful Field. Seeing that the beings of Jambudvīpa had realized the sacred Dharma, they thought, “This Dharma will never fade,” and showered down a rain of heavenly flowers, sitting attentively to listen to the Dharma. Then King Toga, with wise counsel, said to another prince, “Friend, at the central summit of the Snow Mountain King dwells a sage called ‘Upright Virtuous Wisdom.’ Go and behold him and his retinue.” At that moment, the prince, by miraculous power, went to the sage, prostrated, and conveyed the king’s message. Hearing the voice of the Tathāgata proclaiming “holding the earth and transcending saṃsāra,” the sage could not restrain his tears; they flowed continuously, and by their warmth melted the summit of the Snow Mountain King. After his tears ceased, the prince said again, “Friend, if there are beings who see or hear the Tathāgata, the sacred Dharma will abide without decline. You should go; I will not.” The sage replied, “Why? If I abandon the serene abode of the Tathāgata, I cannot enter the assembly.” The prince said, “Friend, here there is a self.” The sage replied, “There is no self,” and debated with the gods: “What you do, you seek from yourself.” The sage said, “If there were a self, it would not age or die. Why? Because it would have no birth, aging, or death, and would never delight in giving. Therefore, there is no self.” Through this teaching, the prince’s views of phenomena became utterly pure, free from specks or stains. Then the prince, like a king soaring into space, departed with his retinue, and a sound arose as if appearing from afar. The friends abided in the sacred Dharma, and the Tathāgata’s teaching blazed brightly. Those who exert themselves diligently extract the essence from the Tathāgata’s teaching. Without diligence, there will be no arising of Buddhas, no hearing of Dharma, no holding of sacred Dharma. Those who do not exert themselves turn back; those who strive dwell in the sacred Dharma and realize that all conditioned phenomena are impermanent and all conditioned phenomena are suffering.
