Thus, when one examines in this way, I myself did not perceive the notion of “I have done this many times.” In a past time, there was an ascetic named “Truthful Sage Red Horse,” who thought: ‘When one reaches the end of the world, that is the time of death.’ Step by step he proceeded toward the summit of Mount Meru, and even by magical power he traveled, yet before reaching the boundary of the world, he died. The Blessed One never said: “Beings can reach the edge of the world by their feet,” but declared: “It is by wisdom that one reaches the end of the world.” Whoever understands the yet-unarisen sufferings to come, and in regard to suffering gives rise to mind, then the great Bodhisattvas aspire only to extinguish craving, thus tending toward the ultimate, without attaching to the worldly limit as a boundary. Therefore, they do not conceive of an accumulation of suffering. But many monks of the Śrāvaka vehicle could not refute such views. Why? Because they lacked the strength of faith, and therefore lacked the fortune to accomplish unsurpassed perfect awakening. Thus, Bodhisattvas who wish to work for the welfare of beings should strive diligently in the strength of faith. So the Buddha spoke. Furthermore, in the past there was a king who held firmly the view of “definite real entities,” believing that all things exist inherently by themselves, not dependent on others, and thus were certain and real. At that time, the Blessed One saw among the king’s ministers a wise one named “Practice of Dharma,” intelligent, skilled in discerning what is to be done and what is not, protector of the royal governance, who had served countless Buddhas, and abided in the Mahāyāna. Then the Buddha, wishing to turn the king away from his fixed grasping at substantial reality, had golden vessels prepared, each separately filled with sesame oil, ghee, milk, food, drink, and condiments. He placed them before the king and asked: “Great King, which of these is the water vessel?” The king summoned the elders of the city, who answered: “This is the water vessel, this is the oil vessel,” and so forth, each clearly designated. Later, the contents were exchanged between the vessels, and when the king entered his pavilion, they were displayed one by one.

Having said this, (the king) said, "Bring water from the bathing water vessel." When (the attendant) offered a water vessel filled with water, the king saw that it was not the previous water vessel, and said to the minister, "Village chief, haven't these water vessels been used up? The vessels that previously held water, like that, were used casually, haven't all the vessels been used up?" The minister replied, "Just as the forms of these vessels are seen by Your Majesty, all things will eventually perish, and nothing is eternal. All things are changing, impermanent, mutable, inconstant, and uncertain. Therefore, great king, you should cultivate the thought of the impermanence and uncertainty of moving things. Great king, young people will become middle-aged, the prime of life will become old age, and old age will also die, therefore all things have no certainty." The king thought, "In order to understand these principles spoken by the village chief, I should strive." Thus, he abandoned attachment to things. Moreover, in the past, the Blessed One was once born as a king named "Seeking the Righteous One." He renounced his kingdom and went forth as a renunciate. Because the senses were distracted by external objects, he thought, "Alas! Which external objects have I renounced to go forth? Sensory distraction is not a good thing. I should put these confused senses into the box of external objects, rely on the samadhi of equality like the sky, and with great strength, completely suppress them." The great Bodhisattvas thought, "What is the samadhi of equality like the sky?" They also thought, "These dharmas are like the sky, just as the sky has no obstruction, all external objects are also like the sky, complete non-discrimination is without obstruction. Discrimination binds, non-discrimination liberates. Therefore, I should abandon discrimination." Thus, he began to cut off all attachments, thereby obtaining the samadhi of equality like the sky, and obtained forbearance of the unproduced dharma. At that time, he obtained the ability to generate the power of the realm of dharma.
