At that time, there was a sage named 'Blue Incense Offering' who engaged in joyful dialogue with another sage. The sage 'Shining Appearance' asked: “Brahmin, is there any being in the human world who can know the number of leaves on this great tree?” The man replied: “Yes, I can do it as well.” “Then speak it out.” When asked thus, Blue Incense Offering, without looking at the tree, entered for just a moment into the contemplation of counting the number of leaves, and declared: “Unshaken sixty-eight thousand clusters, Sixteen and also further added clusters, Thirteen and tightly bound clusters, Ninety-six thousand gathered clusters, Thirty-nine thousand blood-bound clusters, Thirty thousand are piled clusters, Eight thousand and also vast clusters, Ninety-two thousand leaves indeed exist. Holy Brahmin, please believe me.” Shining Appearance then said: “Excellent! You speak truthfully. Formerly, I myself for twelve years and seven days counted them one by one by means of clairvoyance. Yet you, without seeing the tree or counting its leaves, directly knew the number of leaves through wisdom. Is this knowledge yours alone, or was it revealed by the gods?” Blue Incense Offering replied: “This was not spoken by the gods; it is mine. Even if the sky were to vanish and crumble, I would not speak falsely.” Then the sage Shining Appearance declared: “This one is truly a son of the Śākya clan.” Furthermore, in the past, when the Blessed One was the king named “Tre Shang Ku” (an ancient ruler), there was a Brahmin of high caste and great prestige who had a daughter, beautiful and wise. She was intended for his son, the Lion, but the Brahmin, out of caste pride and attachment to doctrine, reviled and refused to give her. The king, with right knowledge, destroyed that Brahmin’s caste arrogance, showing him by reasoning the surpassing of all doctrines, and completely refuted him. The Brahmin then sincerely submitted, praised, and offered his daughter. This is explained in detail in the “Lion Sūtra.” Again, in former lives, the Blessed One, in order to seek the boundless wisdom, practiced the great six perfections on a vast scale. At that time there was a Brahmin named “Utpal-Eye” who offered to the Buddha and his retinue a temple and many other things. Such immeasurable, countless, inconceivable virtues are as the sūtras say.

Having made offerings with immeasurable varieties of offerings to the immeasurable, and having made aspirations to attain the wisdom of the ten powers; having asked about and comprehended all the aspects of the Dharma in the presence of the Buddhas, and then having shown them to others; having served immeasurable Tathagatas with service that accords with their hearts, having listened to and held the Dharma; for the sake of the benefit and happiness of various realms of sentient beings, having taken countless births of various kinds such as kings, Brahmins, musicians, and singers, and having matured sentient beings, these deeds are beyond description. Some of these are mentioned in the Sutra of Extensive Wisdom and others, but here a few rough outlines will be described. In the past, the Bhagavan himself was a king named "All Beautiful," abiding in the Great Vehicle, and became the ruler of the four great continents. He thought, "I should rule the kingdom with Dharma, just as the previous Chakravartins did. If I engage in non-Dharma, the name of king is meaningless." So, he asked the ministers, "How did the previous kings rule the kingdom so that the kingdom would not decline but prosper?" The ministers replied, "O God, we do not know the meaning of that. There are sages with five clairvoyances nearby, who are skilled in Dharma and treatises. Please summon them, and they will tell the stories of the previous Chakravartins." The king listened to their advice and invited the renunciate sages to the royal palace called "Ocean" with great respect. Among the eighty trillion sages, most of them possessed clairvoyance, practiced virtue for a long time, and desired to benefit beings. The king, together with his retinue, greeted them with great reverence at a distance, generating the perception of a teacher, prostrated to them, and engaged in truthful conversation with those sages. At that time, about eighty thousand people who recited past stories gathered for the purpose of accomplishing the Chakravartin's state. The king showed respect to all of them. The sages and those people spoke of the essence of the past stories of the Chakravartin.
