sitting in front. Son of Buzama, do not tell anyone, if you tell my father, I will inflict a great punishment on you, and so he began to harm her. She, out of fear, loudly recited: Homage to the One with Radiant Webbed Feet! She recited this three times. A deity who greatly delighted in the One with Webbed Feet said: Holy One, your younger sibling is suffering harm and distress, please have compassion on him. After saying this, he went to her by means of miraculous power and said: Do not harm this girl, what harm has she done to you? The ogress said: This girl told my father that this is an ogress, so I will eat her, leave! The sage said: This girl is poor, quarreling out of hunger, please let her go! She said: Holy One, she must be released by oath, or she can be ordained. The sage said: Ogress, let her go, and I will have her ordained. After saying this, he had her ordained and gave her teachings, and through diligence, the five superknowledges were accomplished. At that time, the younger sibling was a herder with a lineage of hand-held objects, and the ogress at that time was this blue-lotus-colored girl. Now, even in the time of the Buddha, he was freed from being food for yakshas from the hand of this herder with a lineage of hand-held objects, and freed from the bonds of the blue-lotus-colored one, and established in the fruit of non-returning. Furthermore, in the past, in Varanasi, there was a king named Brahma-given, who had great power, and the country was peaceful and prosperous. His queen was named Brahma-given Woman, and there was a Brahma-given pond. The king had no son, so he prayed to the gods for a son. Although not solely because of such prayers, if one accumulates karmic forces, a son can be born. There, a sentient being who had made aspirations for unsurpassed perfect enlightenment and had a firm commitment, transmigrated from hell and entered the womb of Queen Brahma-given Woman. A woman of wise nature knows five things: she knows whether a man is stained or unstained, she knows the time, she knows menstruation, she knows conception, she knows where conception takes place, and she knows whether it is a boy or a girl. Therefore, that queen knew.

The king said to me: “You will have a son.” Then he rejoiced and made good aspirations, offering great wealth to the queen so that the child in the womb would mature well and she would remain happy and unharmed. One day, the king performed great generosity, accumulating pure merit, and thought, “If I do this virtue, surely there will be good results,” and he acted accordingly, even releasing the prisoners. Another day, I stayed with the king in the cabin of a boat, delighting at the sacred pond, singing with joy, thinking, “How delightful this is,” and so I did. While on the boat, I remembered that I had once been born as a handsome boy, with a body as splendid as gold and endowed with auspicious marks. When this thought arose, people gathered nearby, and after twenty-one days they held a birth celebration and asked what name to give the boy. Because he was born in water, they named him “Water-born.” The child was raised by eight wet nurses. Later he contemplated where he had died before and realized he had once been a wheel-turning king for sixty years, then fell into hell, and now had taken this birth. He thought: “If I become a king again, I will fall into hell once more,” and so he devised a way to renounce the throne. On the day of Water-born’s birth, five hundred sons of ministers were also born. Later, when those boys could run, the king thought: “If Water-born does not renounce, even though he can now run and jump, he should be enthroned as crown prince.” Water-born saw the king’s strong attachment to something meaningless and thought, “I will act as if foolish,” and so he behaved like a fool. The other boys thought, “If Water-born were not foolish, he could also speak,” and so they called him “The Fool Renouncer.” Later the king was distressed, and the ministers asked: “O King, though you possess sovereignty, you have neither sons nor daughters. If I die, the royal lineage will be cut off, and the only son has become a fool—how can you not be troubled?”

No illness was found. The ministers gathered all the physicians. When the physicians examined him, they saw that the young man had clear senses, without the slightest disease, yet they said: ‘He only bears a sign of fear.’ Then the king ordered the executioners to stay their hands, secretly instructing: ‘This young fool, I have already renounced him publicly before the great assembly of people, therefore you must not kill him.’ The executioners accepted this as divine command. They placed the youth upon a wooden horse and led him into the center of Vārāṇasī. Seeing the land prosperous and abundant, the youth said: ‘Is this Vārāṇasī truly empty? Yet there is a dwelling here.’ The executioners then offered the foolish youth back to the king, and the youth uttered words in a divine voice. The king took the youth onto his lap and asked: ‘Whom shall I kill? Whom shall I drive away? Whom shall I deprive of life? To whom shall I give something?’ The youth remained utterly silent. The king entrusted him again to the executioners, who led him away. The youth then saw a host of hungry spirits and said: ‘Is this the dead who are dead, or the living who die?’ The executioners brought him back to the king once more. The king asked him four questions again, but the youth still did not speak. The king again entrusted him to the executioners. The youth saw a great mass of fruit and said: ‘This great mass of fruit, though never eaten, shall yet decay.’ The executioners again returned him to the king, and the king asked again, but the youth still kept silence. Then the king ordered the executioners to take him to the garden and bury him. As they began to dig, the youth asked: ‘Why does the king command that I be buried?’ Then, trembling with fear, he said to the executioners: ‘If the gods should grant me supreme power, I shall enter the city and speak words aloud.’ The executioners reported this to the king, who rejoiced and said: ‘If the youth desires the royal authority, I shall bestow it upon him.’ Thus he had the entire city adorned in preparation.
