The great sage, together with noble ones, renounced the household life and went forth. Relying upon the instructions given, with powerful diligence he manifested the five superknowledges. Later, in another time, when that sage’s life was complete, the youth named Foolish-Breaker offered worship by burning various fragrant woods. To five hundred youths who were his companions, he gave instructions, and by their effort they too accomplished the five superknowledges. At that time, the youth Foolish-Breaker abandoned the royal throne and entered the forest, manifesting the qualities of meditation; this was the Blessed One himself while still a bodhisattva. Again, the Blessed One in a former life was a teacher of outsiders called Beautiful-Eyes. At that time, he was also free from desire and attachment, endowed with miraculous powers, teaching the Dharma among countless assemblies without exhaustion, showing it utterly pure. His Dharma teachings mostly arose in the pure worlds of Brahma and among gods and humans of holy destiny. Then that teacher Beautiful-Eyes attained the second meditation. Teacher Beautiful-Eyes, in that way, was also companion to the brahmin youths named Subduer and Elephant-Keeper. Again, in a past life, the Blessed One himself was the outsider teacher called Foolish-Breaker, endowed with miraculous powers, detached from desire, with five hundred brahmin youths as disciples. Later, he thought: ‘Why is it that these youths have not attained the five superknowledges?’ He then filled vessels with sheep-fat, neem fruits, reeds, and bamboo containers, making offerings, and diligently applied roots and herbs, intending to prolong life. He thought: ‘Unless I employ strong means, separation will be difficult.’ As a bodhisattva skilled in guiding beings, he resolved to place the brahmin youths correctly within himself. He thought: ‘Only one brahmin youth, who shares root and fruit with me, together with the one of purification training, should come, and no others.’ Thus the youths were bound under discipline. At that time, teacher Foolish-Breaker, from afar, saw a wild beast and said: ‘Welcome, wild beast, come here!’

If one says: “Beast, you and I are equal, merely filling the belly is enough,” yet some are not like this, for they exert themselves, relying on roots of food and filth, engaging in ascetic practice. The Brahmin youths, unwilling to eat such things, thought the ascetic had attained perfection, and came before the Buddha, bowing and sitting, but speaking nothing. Others, not speaking to humans but speaking with beasts, likewise thought the ascetic had attained, and departed. Then, an ascetic among beasts came to the Buddha, scratching himself and shaking his hair. From afar he saw the Buddha and called out: “Ascetic beast, you have come, well done, come here! You and I are alike, sharing the same cattle stall, each with round food, straw, and dung vessels. You and I need only enough to fill the belly. Yet there are others not like this, for they accumulate many stalls and strive in matters of food and filth.” Seeing this, the Brahmin youths mocked those of great desire and praised those of few desires. Because of this, the Buddha admonished them severely: “Do not, because of my words, abandon your mother. The leftover pills and dung vessels, cast them into the constant-flowing water, and follow me.” They acted accordingly, purifying body and mind, and came before the Buddha, bowing and sitting. The Buddha, knowing their thoughts and natures, expounded the Dharma of the five direct knowledges. Moreover, in earlier times, when human lifespan was eighty thousand years, the harms to their bodies were cold and heat, hunger and thirst, desire, food, and old age. At that time, King Jyedzin (Possessor of Action), in the royal park of Nyagrodha in the mountain kingdom, a Brahmin named “Red Whip of Mantra,” before the Blessed One, gave rise to the mind of enlightenment. That Brahmin instructed about five hundred youths in Brahmin secret words. Dwelling alone, he reflected thus: ‘Human life is short and must end in death; if being born there were no death, then…’

In order to have virtuous actions, beings who wish to practice goodness should always maintain a heart of diligence towards virtuous actions. My lord has been pursuing this goal since inconceivable eons. As for all practitioners, through effort, the heart to perform goodness can further grow. Practitioners should not fear hardships and must persist in their efforts throughout their lives. Such practitioners will ultimately achieve supreme results and gain realization of truth. Whether in the performance of virtuous acts or facing difficult situations, practitioners must remain steadfast and brave. For this reason, we should constantly reflect on the motives of our hearts and, in times of difficulty, persist in our practice, to eventually fulfill our goals. Those who endure will be able to walk the path of awakening and ultimately harmonize with the truth. Regardless of external circumstances, practitioners maintain their inner practice and continue to follow the teachings without fail. Only by continuous effort can one reach the final goal of practice.
