From folio 601 to 700. From folio 601 to 700. Though the assembly tried to dissuade him from casting himself into the fire, he could not turn back, for he wished to fulfill the teacher’s intention. Thus, he donned the robe of flames and requested the Brahmin to proclaim the Dharma. The Brahmin spoke: “Always delight in giving, always live with perfect moral discipline, establish yourself in the supreme state of diligence, and through wisdom obtain the supreme holy Dharma.” Having spoken thus, he held it firmly. A great many people gathered. To them he spoke this verse, and declared: “This act I do for unsurpassed enlightenment, may it not be fruitless.” Having uttered this truth, he leapt into the fire, died, and was reborn seated upon a lotus pond, where he revealed the Dharma adorned with the four Brahmavihāras. The Brahmin, with his entire body consumed by flames, fell into the great hell. Then a Dharma-seeker said: “Master, do not grieve, I shall rescue you.” By this statement of truth, saying: “For the sake of all beings I practice the path of awakening. May this Brahmin’s body-pain cease, and may beings be freed from hell,” he spoke. Immediately, the Brahmin was freed from hell. At that time, that Brahmin was the householder named ‘Treasure of Virtue.’ Again, in a past age, the Blessed One himself was King ‘Brahmagiver,’ who gave away all his possessions. Once, together with his queen and young princes, he went to dwell in a forest. Then a being of dreadful form, a devourer of flesh, appeared before him, bowing with palms joined, and said: “In the past I heard the Thus-Gone One proclaim the Dharma. If you now, for my sake, diligently uphold it, it will be of benefit to you.” The king replied: “Great one, you have spoken well. Whatever you desire, I shall give to you.” That one replied: “Give to me your own body, your sons, and your queen as the three supports of suffering. If you give thus, then as you said well, I shall later expound the Dharma.” The king asked: “What will you do with these?” He replied: “They are for eating, and I shall also teach the Dharma.” Then the king looked at his son on the right, and at his queen on the left. The flesh-eater then said: “Great King, quickly give them. Whatever good you said, it is that which leads beyond saṃsāra.” ...

For the sake of liberation, listen attentively. Then, through the king’s superior reflection, the flesh-eater spoke in verse: ‘For oneself and for others, if one desires happiness, one must not commit sin. If a child desires happiness yet commits sin, the fruit of it he will personally experience.’ Thus he spoke. Then the king, hearing this excellent verse, was greatly amazed and thought: ‘For this reason, I will offer even my son Ganga’s portion to fulfill this verse.’ Rising from his seat, he took his son with his right hand, intending to give him away. The flesh-eater, making his form unseen, revealed himself as a host of hundreds of gods, praising: ‘Well done, brave donor! I am in truth a host of gods; ask for the supreme treasure you wish.’ The king said: ‘Grant me the supreme treasure free from birth, aging, death, and suffering.’ The host of gods replied: ‘This I cannot grant; only the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, the Tathāgatas, can bestow this. Ask for another boon.’ The king said: ‘Even the mighty rulers are seen without true dominion; this, children can observe. Your limitation, O host of gods, is like a great elephant trapped in mire, weakened.’ Thus he spoke. Once in the past, the Blessed One himself appeared in the world as “King Pure Color,” endowed with great majesty and power, and reflected: ‘I have benefitted beings with jewels and wealth, but not yet with the Dharma. I shall seek the Dharma, to liberate all sentient beings.’ Making this vow, he proclaimed: ‘If there is Dharma in this world, let someone reveal it to me, and whatever they desire, I will grant.’ Yet no one came forth to reveal it. Then the king, tormented with sorrow, his mind depressed, heard from his son who revived his spirits. To delight his father, he manifested as a terrifying demon at the palace gate, saying: ‘I will declare the Dharma to the king, listen to me.’ The king rejoiced, bowed down, and placed him on a high seat, gathering ministers and attendants. The demon said: ‘To hear Dharma is exceedingly difficult. If you wish to hear it, this alone is insufficient; you must also offer the queen and the prince.’
