因降临而来，诸小国王、大臣及众眷属皆号泣倒地。虚空诸天降下花雨，泪水盈溢。于是天王因陀罗来到此处，说：你如此艰难地作此行事，是否愿求转轮王等殊胜之境？国王答言：我并非求三界安乐，此所有功德乃为求得佛果。因陀罗言：我观王之身体肿胀不可忍耐，谁能听闻此语而不悔恨？国王答言：若我无悔恨之心，愿我身体复如初，无疮无伤。言毕其身如故，诸天人皆欢喜。 又于往昔，此世界中有名为净天王之子，名叫那玛伽玛者，即是佛陀之往昔化身。彼遍寻圣法而不得，心生疑惑。天主因陀罗知其心意，化为婆罗门现于王宫门前说：我有正法。彼遂请示。因陀罗言：可于深坑内注满十斛沸火，我当跳入其中而示法。王允之，遂造大火坑。时王、王妃、大臣与宫人皆忧惧，祈请太子与婆罗门勿作此行，愿以己身代之。婆罗门曰：我无不可行之事，太子若愿则行，若不能则不示法。太子曰：为法之故，七日后我当跃入火坑，汝等若欲见者速来。乃遍告四方，群臣百姓聚集，仍劝太子勿为。太子言：我历久轮回，身无数次迁转，虽生天人中亦不知欲念之害，常受苦恼与恶趣。

Because of the descent, many petty kings, ministers, and their retinues wept and fell to the ground. The gods of the sky showered a rain of flowers and shed tears. Then the god Indra came there and said: “You endure such hardship—do you desire the dominion of a universal monarch and the like?” The king replied: “I do not seek the happiness of the three realms; all my merit is for the sake of attaining Buddhahood.” Indra said: “I see the king’s body swollen and unbearable—who could hear these words and not regret?” The king said: “If I have no regret, may my body return to its former state without wound or sore.” As soon as he spoke, his body became as before, and the gods and humans rejoiced. In a former time in this world there was a prince, son of King Pure-Deva, named Na Ma Gam, who was the Buddha’s previous incarnation. He sought the sacred Dharma everywhere but did not find it, and fell into doubt. The lord of the gods, Indra, knowing his thought, manifested as a Brahmin and sat at the palace gate saying, “I have the Dharma.” The prince invited him to teach. Indra said: “Prepare a deep pit filled with ten measures of blazing fire. I will leap into it and then teach the Dharma.” The prince agreed and made a great fire pit. At that time the king, the queen, the ministers, and the palace people were uneasy, and they implored the prince and the Brahmin not to do so, offering their own bodies instead. The Brahmin said: “There is nothing I cannot do. If the prince wishes, let him do so; if not, I will not teach.” The prince said: “For the sake of the Dharma, after seven days I will leap into the fire pit; if you wish to witness, come quickly.” Messengers were sent throughout the land, and many lords and subjects gathered. They again entreated the prince not to act thus, but the prince said: “I have wandered long in samsara, countless times changing bodies. Even when born among gods and humans, I did not understand the harm of desire and have suffered torment and fallen into evil realms.”

他们曾经历了各种难以忍受的痛苦，乃至身命将绝，然而却从未为正法而生起一丝善心。如今这卑贱污秽之身，为了正法作供养，请勿在发起无上圆满菩提心之前加以断绝。愿我舍弃此身，以求成佛；未来诸佛之时，愿以此身施诸汝等——此语既发，众眷属亦皆无言。尔时，太子登上火坑，对婆罗门说道：“大导师啊，请于我前宣说正法，倘若此生虚度，将不得闻法。”遂作请愿。婆罗门则诵偈曰：“习以慈心，弃嗔与怒；以大悲心，护诸有情；普施慈爱，不以眼瞋；常修大喜，行与我同；菩提心护，具菩萨行。”偈声方毕，太子遂投身火坑。天帝释与梵王伸手承接，并说道：“人间众生皆蒙大王恩德而无感恩之心，今若太子赴火，则犹如失却一切臣民之父母，故我等愿舍一切，使太子赴火。”太子复顾诸天王与众曰：“汝等勿作阻断我发无上菩提心之业。”众皆缄默。于是太子当即投身火中。彼时天地大震，诸天垂泪如雨。火坑亦化为花池，太子安坐莲台，诸天降花雨以供养。又于往昔，国土（瓦拉纳西，今印度瓦拉纳西）中有五百仙人修行，世尊曾为彼等示教，名为乌陀巴。因婆罗门一人求法之缘，婆罗门遂效法，剥去自身皮肤作纸……

They endured countless unbearable sufferings, even to the point of life approaching its end, yet never once did they arouse even a trace of virtuous mind for the sake of the sacred Dharma. Now, with this base and impure body, as an offering for the Dharma, do not cut it off before I generate the supreme and complete bodhicitta. I shall relinquish this body for the sake of attaining Buddhahood. In future times, when Buddhas arise, may this body serve as an offering to you in the Dharma. Having spoken thus, the entire retinue remained silent. Then the Prince ascended the fire-pit and addressed the Brahmin: “Great Teacher, please teach me the sacred Dharma. If this lifetime passes in vain, I shall not hear the Dharma.” Thus he supplicated. The Brahmin then recited this verse: “Train in loving-kindness, abandon anger and wrath; with great compassion, protect all beings; extend loving affection to all, without hostile glance; cultivate great joy, walk in harmony; protected by bodhicitta, endowed with the conduct of bodhisattvas.” No sooner had he spoken, the Prince leapt into the fire. Indra and Brahmā reached out their hands to hold him, saying: “All beings of the world enjoy the king’s kindness yet remain ungrateful. If now the Prince leaps into the fire, it will be as if all beings lose their parents. Therefore we shall relinquish everything, allowing the Prince to leap into the fire.” The Prince turned toward the heavenly kings and multitudes, saying: “Do not obstruct me from the deed of arousing unsurpassed bodhicitta.” All remained silent. At once the Prince leapt into the fire. Then heaven and earth quaked; the gods shed tears like rain. The fire-pit transformed into a pool of flowers, upon which the Prince sat on a lotus. The gods rained down blossoms as offering. Moreover, in former times, within the land of Vārāṇasī (present-day Varanasi, India), there dwelt five hundred ṛṣis.
