Thus, with a pen made from bone, he wrote and recited these verses: Guard well the conduct of the body, Do not kill, do not steal, do not commit adultery, Abandon all false views— This is the practice of a bodhisattva. These words were inscribed and proclaimed throughout the human realm, so that countless people were inspired to hold them firmly. Once, when the Blessed One was in the world, there was a king named “Beautiful Form.” He ruled in accordance with the Dharma, upheld justice, and through his great generosity brought abundance to all beings. His queen was called “Lovely Beauty,” of fair appearance yet inwardly afflicted. She bore a son, called “Handsome Youth,” pleasing in form and delightful. The king, desiring the Dharma, searched throughout the land but found no one who could preach it. He lamented: “When a Buddha arises in the world, the Dharma flourishes; now, it cannot be found.” Therefore, he placed a vessel filled with gold atop the palace pinnacle and proclaimed: “Whoever can teach the Dharma, to him I will offer this treasure and pay great homage.” Yet no one came. The king, longing for Dharma, fell into sorrow. Then, Śakra, Lord of the Gods, wishing to test him, manifested as a hideous rakṣasa and preached the Dharma. The king rejoiced and wished to listen. But the rakṣasa said: “I require fresh human flesh and blood for sustenance.” The king thought: “If by this I may obtain the Dharma, so be it.” At that moment, Prince Handsome Youth entreated to offer himself. Though the king was anguished, he did not refuse and gave him away. The rakṣasa, by magic, severed the prince’s limbs one by one and devoured them. Yet the king did not regret, for the sake of Dharma. The rakṣasa said again: “O King, this still does not suffice.” The king then gave his queen, Lovely Beauty, who was also consumed. Again, the rakṣasa said: “Still, it is not enough.” The king exclaimed: “I have given both my son and my queen, what more do you desire?” The rakṣasa replied: “Only your own body.” The king said: “If I give my body, how then shall I hear the Dharma?” The rakṣasa answered: “First I will teach you the Dharma, afterward I shall take your body.” Then the rakṣasa made a solemn vow…

Having proclaimed the Dharma, sorrow arises from suffering, fear arises from suffering, and liberation arises from fear. If there is no sorrow, where would there be fear? Upon hearing this verse, his heart was filled with joy, and he said, "Do with my body as you wish." The king, with unwavering resolve, was greatly pleased by Indra, who revealed himself, took his son with his right hand and his wife with his left, returned them, and praised him endlessly. The king also said to Indra, "I have fulfilled my wish for the Dharma, it is excellent!" Furthermore, in the past, there was a king named Brahma-datta, who acted according to the Dharma. When the queen conceived a holy child, she longed to hear good teachings and told the king. The fortune-tellers also praised the merits of the fetus. The king bestowed a hundred million gold coins and searched for good teachings everywhere, but found nothing. Later, the queen gave birth to a handsome boy, who was named "Seeking Good Teachings." When he grew up, he still could not find good teachings. Later, his father passed away, and he inherited the throne. He ordered his ministers to seek good teachings and bestowed a hundred million gold coins, asking them to search throughout Jambudvipa, but still found nothing. The king was tormented by longing, and Indra, knowing this, transformed himself into an ugly Yaksha to test him. The Yaksha sat before the king and said, "One should practice good Dharma, one should not practice evil Dharma. Those who practice good Dharma will dwell in happiness in this world and the next." Hearing these words, the king was overjoyed and said, "Please, secret messenger, recite that verse again, I wish to listen." The Yaksha said, "If you do as I say, I will recite it again." The king asked, "What must I do?" The Yaksha said, "Within seven days, kindle a fire pit with acacia wood, and then you jump into it, and I will recite that verse again from below." Hearing these words, the king happily agreed and proclaimed throughout the country, "In seven days, the king will throw himself into the fire pit to hear good teachings, let those who wish to witness the miracle come!" Therefore, countless beings gathered.
