Seated in the noble palace, he spoke: “Alas, all conditioned things are impermanent; arising, they perish—this is the nature of phenomena.” Having said so, he remained seated. The king thought: “This opens the door to liberation, and reveals the path to enlightenment.” Then, clapping his hands, he said: “Friend, speak in verse!” At that time, countless ministers replied: “If I am hungry and thirsty, I will offer my own warm flesh and blood.” The king reflected: “It is not proper to harm others; therefore I shall give my own body.” Then a hundred thousand devas proclaimed: “Alas, all conditioned things are impermanent; what arises will cease. Having been born, they end; and near to cessation there is peace and bliss.” The king pondered deeply: “This indeed is the gate and the path that transcends suffering, and through it, full Buddhahood is assured.” Thus, taking up his sword, he commanded his attendants to follow these words, gave away his palace and treasures, and resolved even to donate his entire body for the sake of unsurpassed enlightenment. He made a great vow: “For the sake of supreme awakening, I now give away this body.” At that moment, the earth shook in six ways, and heavenly flowers rained down. The devas thought: “His former body cannot be regained; now we must bring him joy.” So they asked: “When you cut away your flesh, do you not feel displeasure?” The bodhisattva replied: “I feel no displeasure at all; rather, compassion arises for beings born in hell and other realms of suffering.” They asked again: “Who believes this?” The bodhisattva replied: “Urged by truth, I myself believe it.” The devas said: “Then, if urged by truth, let your body be restored as before.” Instantly, his body became whole again. The hundred thousand devas revealed their true forms and declared: “It was not with the thought of harming you, but to bring you delight. Seeing your perseverance like this, know that no demon can devour you, nor calamity overcome you.”

Meanwhile, I thought: “Let me keep this in mind.” Having thought so, I fell into obscuration. Again, in the case of King Śibi for the second time, since his foundation was as before, the god Hundred Blessings said: “What benefit is there in you being my disciple? I say I shall harm you—if you can endure, then recite a verse.” The Bodhisattva accepted: even if told he would be harmed, he still spoke the verses. When he came to the fourth verse, while a spear was thrust through the leaf, he lay down himself, endured the burning hardship, and made prayers for unsurpassed enlightenment. At that time, due to the earth shaking and the power of truth, his body remained as before, his knowledge as the former words. Again, in a past immeasurable aeon, when the Blessed Buddha, the Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened Śākyamuni taught this sūtra, the Blessed One, being then a Bodhisattva, heard it with joy, wishing to make offerings, but being poor had no means. Even though he tried to sell his body, his merit was insufficient, so he could not. Returning home, he met a man who asked: “If you sell your body, will anyone buy it?” He replied: “I have a karmic illness no one can cure. If you can cure it, I will buy.” Asked what illness, he said: “I have an incurable disease; only if a skilled physician eats three ounces of human flesh daily can it be healed. If you can, I shall give you five golden bowls.” Hearing this, the man rejoiced: “If you give me the bowls, allow me seven days, I will do as needed; then you may do as you wish.” He replied: “Seven days are not allowed, only one day.” Then taking the bowls, he went before the Buddha, bowed, and made full offerings. With focused mind, he listened to this sūtra. At that time, even one with dull faculties, though hearing the sūtra, retained only a single verse. The verse was: “The Thus-Gone One, passing into Nirvāṇa, cuts off all of saṃsāra. Whoever listens with single-pointed mind will attain measureless and everlasting bliss.” Having retained this verse, he returned to the sick man’s house, and each day cut three ounces of his flesh. Because of remembering this verse, he did not perish.

In a single day, continuing without interruption for a full month, thus blessed, the sick were healed, and their bodies restored as before. Joyful, they aroused the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. If the power of a single verse can achieve such, how much more so when complete; therefore seeing the benefit of this scripture, their minds grew exalted, vowing that in a future time they would attain the Buddha’s enlightenment and be named Śākyamuni. Having made this aspiration, they demonstrated it before a great assembly of gods and humans. Long ago, countless eons past, the Blessed One himself was the supreme great sage, dwelling in forests and mountains, endowed with the five superknowledges, abiding constantly in loving-kindness and compassion. He thought: “I abide in loving-kindness which brings joy to beings, yet the poisons and afflictions accumulated over endless eons cannot be stilled, nor can I give rise to the noble right view. From where does such right view arise?” Reflecting thus, he knew it arises from the voices of others and from one’s own practice. Therefore he traveled through villages and cities seeking the Dharma everywhere, but did not find it. Then a deity of the demon hosts approached and said: “I possess a single stanza spoken by the Buddha. If you flay your own skin and dry it in the sun as paper, use your own blood as ink, and your own bones as a pen to write this stanza, I will give it to you.” The sage thought: “In the past I have wandered in cyclic existence, for the sake of desires and wealth, kings, enemies and butchers have cut my body to pieces, yet I never acted for the benefit of beings. Now, if with this useless body I can obtain the Dharma, it will indeed be well obtained.” Rejoicing, delighted, he gave rise to the resolve of a disciple toward that deity, and with a sharp blade cut his own skin, dried it in the sun as paper, and with his own blood as ink…
