As it is spoken in the Sutra of the Lamp of the Moon. Again, in a former time, when he took the form of an antelope, a rishi, desiring the Dharma, leapt into fire; when he was a king, for the sake of half a verse of Dharma, he gave away all the ornaments of his body and cast himself into a gorge; when he was born as the king’s daughter endowed with wisdom, in order to cure the illness of a Dharma preacher, she mixed food with her own flesh and offered it, and so forth. In this way, the Thus-Gone One, in past lives, never withheld body, life, or royal authority for the sake of the holy Dharma. Even for half a verse, he would implant a thousand oil lamps upon his body and ignite them, and by the light of the flame, he heard that half verse completely. Such extremely difficult deeds beyond measure he accomplished. Thus, in past immeasurable kalpas, by great sufferings and extraordinary sacrifices, he sought the Dharma. This is truly the perfection of patience in enduring hardships for the Dharma, also the discipline that gathers all virtue, the great diligence conjoined with effort, the great generosity of giving away for the Dharma, and the great wisdom that arises from hearing. Through transmission, he gave Dharma as a gift to sentient beings, and further accomplished the causes of transcendent meditation, thereby becoming endowed with the six pāramitās, and likewise, in the occasions of other perfections, both directly and through continuity, he fulfilled the six perfections, so that all the conduct of a bodhisattva was established through the door of the mind as endowed with the six pāramitās. Know this as the time of seeking the Dharma. In the past, in an age gone by, there was a Dharma King named Brahma-giver. In his presence, the Blessed One was born as his son. Because his hands and feet were connected by webbing, he was named 'Webbed Hands and Feet'. Later, when a younger brother was born without such webs, he was named 'Unwebbed Feet'. The one with webs thought, 'It is not proper that I should serve before my father,' and so asked to go forth. His father asked, 'Why, when in my presence I practice giving and offerings which also come into your hands, do you now wish to renounce and go forth?' The son replied, 'Because in the forest there dwells a sage who, for the sake of the kingdom, has cut off my life…'

Concerning the verse about not sowing seeds in sandy soil: the father, fully understanding its meaning and urging earnestly, gave permission. He then entered among the ṛṣis, went forth as a renunciant, and, dwelling in one-pointed meditation, he developed the five kinds of super-knowledge. That man without hands and feet nets went in search of secret words to another land. In the southern cliffs there lived a Brahmin who had a daughter. This daughter, because of family and wealth, was not to be given away, but the Brahmin thought: “Whosoever masters the four sciences, to him I shall give her.” That man without hands and feet nets wandered about until he came before the Brahmin, studied the sciences, and in a short time mastered all four. The Brahmin then gave him his daughter. The Brahmin’s son and that daughter were resting on the roof when a cool wind blew down; the daughter stretched out her hand like an elephant’s trunk to grasp, and the son, seeing this, was terrified. Later, when she encountered a corpse, she stretched out her elephant-trunk-like hand to touch it, and the dead revived. Though she was startled, she did not show joy or celebration. The daughter then asked: “Why is it that, though you are with me, you always keep distant and do not draw near?” The son replied: “Have you ever seen anyone who could dwell intimately with the Lord of Death?” The daughter said: “Prince, do not fear, I do not arouse thoughts of conjugal life.” The son replied: “I must test this myself.” The daughter was alarmed, so she feigned sleep. The son then acted as he wished, but the daughter went into the company of embodied celestial maidens. The son slowly followed after and saw that those maidens had shaved heads and terrifying appearances; he grew frightened and retreated. Then, saying nothing, he went before the teacher and said, “It was thus.” The teacher said: “If so, then bring the girl also.” The son, afraid, said: “She truly is not a woman.” The teacher asked: “Why so?” and he was silent. The Brahmin asked his daughter: “Will you no longer keep the household?” The daughter replied: “Father, why does he say so?” The son said: “Because you are not a woman.” The father said: “Indeed, my daughter is not a woman.” Thus the Brahmin put her in a hide bag and sent her away. That embodied celestial maiden, filled with wrath, twisted and contorted her entire form, her hands, feet, and eyes turning round, and she went away along the road.
