When this young mute entered the city on foot, it caused amazement, and hundreds of thousands of creatures gathered. The young man entered the city on foot and touched the king's feet, saying, "O King, I am not a mute, nor am I foolish and ignorant. I will clarify with clear words." He spoke these verses and then said, "All my senses are intact. I remember past lives, and in the past among humans, I served as regent for sixty years, and therefore experienced unbearable suffering in hell for sixty thousand years. I remember these, so I do not want to go to hell again, and I have no interest in the throne. Please allow me to renounce." The king said, "Those who practice asceticism and make offerings do so for the sake of the throne, why do you renounce the throne that is about to be in your palm?" The young man said, "Do not indulge in desires like Kimpa fruits, I will practice the Brahmacharya like the taste of nectar fruits." The king said, "Son, all the happiness you experience is from the throne, why do you renounce it?" The young man said, "I do not think that happiness that produces suffering is happiness, I do not think that suffering that produces happiness is suffering. Please allow me to renounce, I will go to the forest to practice asceticism." The king said, "Son, first live in high-rise buildings decorated with incense and flowers, and enjoy the pleasures of food, clothing, ornaments, and music. Why live under a silent tree, sleep on a grass mat, live with fierce beasts, rely on bark clothes, food of roots and fruits, and drinks of water? Why do you renounce the throne and go to the forest?" The young man said, "It is best to wear bark clothes in the forest, eat fruits, and live with fierce beasts. The wise should not kill, beat, and bind for the sake of the throne because of the fear of the next life. Please allow me to renounce, I will go to the forest to practice asceticism." The king said, "Son, first resolve these three doubts of mine, and then..."

Therefore, you will not delight in renouncing the world. When you beheld the prosperity of Varanasi, you wondered, “Is this all empty?” Yet when you said, “But there is some existence,” what thought was in your mind? Young man, for the sake of that deity, remain alive. Since you had not harmed me, yet were commanded to be buried, I thought, “Why should this youth be killed, when the words of Dharma do not command so?” Thus I replied accordingly. The king said: “Excellent! When you see a corpse, do you consider this death itself, or is it the death of one still living?” Reflecting, you answered: That deity, having committed unwholesome deeds, died — that is true death. But one who has done virtuous deeds and dies prematurely — that is the death of a living being. Thinking thus, you spoke accordingly. “Excellent!” Again, when you beheld the great abundance of fruit, you said: “This great fruit, from the beginning, was not consumed, yet it will wither.” What did you mean? That deity’s case is like this: farmers, when the field’s fruits have ripened, gather and eat them, discard the kernels, and make them vanish. Thus, even the core is already consumed beforehand. In the same way, if by the ten virtuous deeds one obtains human birth, but does not continue to follow the tenfold virtuous path, the earlier virtues will cease, and when the roots of goodness are cut off, one will fall from fortunate destinies into miserable states. Thinking this, I spoke thus. Then the king, hearing these words, shed tears, embraced his son, and said: “Firmly uphold ascetic discipline, live by your own Dharma. I also accept you as my disciple.” Then King Brahmā told his ministers: “O wise ones, if this foolish youth does not renounce, what will he become? He will become a king among the gods. What will your sons become? They will become servants of that deity. But if he renounces, why should your sons not also renounce? The command of the deity ends here.” At that time, not far from Varanasi, there dwelt a sage, the embodiment of loving-kindness, who cherished all beings with compassion. To him this foolish youth, accompanied by five hundred attendants, came.
