Becoming the protector of the earth. One said: What is the root that you carry? It was proclaimed before the king, blessed with mantras and so forth, may it likewise be honored by the king. Another said: To desire the root but not virtue, skillfully learn and teach, with great hope become one who can endure hardships, may all the people of the land offer to him. A friend said: As for the root you cling to, it brings noble wealth about four hundredfold, obtained from kings to enjoy, yet never freed from craving, it leads only to death. A servant said: Because of the root, the master’s life is preserved; among friends he becomes their chief; the punishments of kings cannot harm him; women’s songs and dances delight him. A sister said: What root do you carry? She becomes queen consort of the king, with beauty and radiant splendor shining, she becomes supreme among noble queens. A maidservant said: Whoever sees the root but does not see the Dharma, he is apart from all virtues alone, receiving honor yet indulging, he delights in fine food. Then in that forest, demons of samsara, elephants, and monkeys came to hear the Dharma; having heard, they became greatly ashamed and displeased. Because the demons revealed their own purity, they bowed in submission before all. Because of your root you were deluded: the great temples adorned, the pools and terraces arranged, all illuminated by the rays of the sun. The great elephant said: O Supreme Sage! The root you carried was plundered, bound by six hundred strong ropes, like wounds cut by sharp iron, abandoned in the forest and going to the village. The monkey said: Because your root was dried and taken, bound with garlands of flowers and antlers, struck with a stick and cast into the mouth of a snake, then tied with creepers and kept at home. The Bodhisattva, with gentle words of taming and patience, said this: What is it that though not destroyed is truly destroyed? What is it that in this way is exactly you?
