Doubt arose. When the mind delights in desire and indulges in it, one dwells at home and eventually meets death. Then, Śakra, the Lord of the Devas, saw them and recognized their qualities of solitude, restraint, and few desires. Perceiving their practice of approaching worldly pleasures with detachment yet not enjoying them, with firm endurance in meditative calm, he marveled greatly. With reverence and wonder, he displayed his own glorious radiant form and said, unable to restrain himself: ‘Stay awhile! Strive in your mind to attain the true fruit. For the sake of bliss, do not give way even to sleep. Through effort and hardship, the true attainment is won. Why then cling still to desire?’ The Bodhisattva said: ‘Friend, desire is boundless in faults. Wherever examined, the sages do not engage in desire, as the scriptures briefly declare. Because of desire, the world is bound and destroyed; because of desire, beings suffer fear and torment; because of desire, even kings perish; because of desire, those who break the Dharma fall to hell. Because of desire, friends quickly become foes; because of desire, one follows deceitful, impure ways; because of desire, fame decays, and later suffering returns. All these afflictions arise from desire. Therefore, the noble, the middling, and the low alike must cut off desire. On this shore and the other, desire must be slain. Like the poison of a serpent, seeming helpful but in truth harmful, the wise do not rely upon it.’ Then Śakra, Lord of the Devas, thought: ‘These words are true,’ and praised them openly. Through the power of those ṛṣis, he became joyful and admitted his own faults: ‘When examined, virtues will be realized as hoped. Through this examination, I have here realized the hidden root of the lotus. By this root, your conduct is revealed. The sage who speaks truth shows the Protector of beings.’ Having said this, he offered the root of the lotus to the Bodhisattvas. Thereafter, the Bodhisattvas’ vast conduct shone with great splendor, unshaken by any radiance or majesty, and with fierce words they declared: ‘We are not your kin or friends. We are not dancers, nor your companions. What concern is your Lordship of the gods to us?’

… (some beginning syllables missing) He said: “Act toward the sages as though in a child’s play.” Then the Lord of the gods, with utmost reverence, caused his earrings and diadem to shimmer with light that made his face radiant, and bowing, he prayed for forgiveness: “I, having acted in this unstable way, did so as necessity required, as earlier declared—like a father or teacher, please forgive me. The eyes of wisdom may grow dim, by nature one may fall into error, yet since this was of benefit to me, please bear with it, and do not hold it in your heart.” Having said this, he became invisible. At that time, six youths appeared in succession: the son of Śāriputra, the son of Maudgalyāyana, the great Guardian of Light, the Snowy One, the Unceasing One, and the All-Joyful One. His sister had the color of a blue utpala lotus; the maidservant was Kubjottarā; the servant man was a handsome householder; the yakṣa was Mount Comfort; the great elephant was Sārīloka; the monkey was the Honey-Offering One; Brahmā was the Black Cloud that brings rain—so was it spoken. Moreover, in a former life, the Blessed One was born into a Brahmin family, mastered the branches of knowledge, was renowned for wisdom, wealthy and delighted in giving. Perceiving that the householder’s life was the source of many faults, he renounced his household wealth, went forth, and strove in the discipline of ascetic hardship. At that time, because of his great virtues, many people who delighted in them gathered and followed him. But he, not desiring gatherings, dwelt alone in the solitude of an isle within the southern ocean, abiding in ascetic practice. Though dwelling in the forest of hardship, since he had long trained in generosity, whenever visitors came he would offer roots, fruits, and pure water, greeting them with words of joy, saying “Welcome, well come,” and making offerings. Thus he became known as the sage named Aṣṭeya. Then Brahmā, testing him, caused all roots, fruits, and supplies in that monastery to vanish. Yet the Bodhisattva, having contentment, no attachment to food, no clinging to the body, and established in meditative stability, did not perceive these as obstacles.
