One should not give rise to desire. Thus he gathered the tender leaves of trees, boiled and ate them, dwelling in ease of mind. Again, King Hundred Gifts caused that in that region, all trees and fruits bore without shedding leaves. He gathered those slightly withered leaves, boiled them in water, and ate. At that time, King Hundred Gifts assumed the form of a Brahmin, joyfully came as a companion to the Bodhisattva, rejoicing in the rarity of such a one. He received all the cooked food from him, and the Bodhisattva, content in mind, sustained himself day and night in meditation. That Brahmin came in this way for three days, offering joy and worship. Then King Hundred Gifts marveled, saying: This is indeed a great ascetic. If he desired the glory of the Lord of the Thirty-Three, with a mere thought it would be attained. Realizing this, he gave rise to doubt and fear. He transformed his body into that of a god and asked: Why do you practice such austerities? What is your intention? The Bodhisattva replied: For the sake of protecting beings from birth, aging, sickness, and death, I abide thus. King Hundred Gifts knew this was not for his own glory but for others, rejoiced greatly, and said to the Bodhisattva: I will grant you supreme generosity; whatever you desire, state it. The Bodhisattva said: Wives, sons, wealth, though great, are like the fetters of ignorance; let these not abide in my heart. King Hundred Gifts, hearing this, rejoiced and praised, wishing to make supreme offerings. The Bodhisattva said: I wish to teach the Dharma, so I request the supreme. Thus, with the supreme gift of being free of anger and hatred, able to enhance virtue and happiness. King Hundred Gifts again rejoiced, praising, and wished to give supreme generosity. The Bodhisattva said: The supreme gift is that which delivers foolish beings from the suffering they cannot see or hear, freeing them from the common lot of ignorance. King Hundred Gifts exclaimed: Alas! Ordinary beings are the very basis of compassion; why would one with compassion not wish to see them? The Bodhisattva replied: However one acts, it is hard to truly benefit fools; for they cling to improper ways, and when joined with them, being not in accord with the conduct of discipline and sages, even when benefit is shown, it turns to turmoil. Moreover, they are filled with pride and delusion, slothful and indolent…

Because my merit is small, though filled with compassion, I know I am unfit to be a vessel for vast benefit, therefore I do not even desire merely to behold. The god Hundred Blessings praised his noble words, filling his heart with flowers, bowed and requested him to accept the supreme offering. The Bodhisattva said: When one sees the steadfast, when one hears the steadfast, when one accompanies the steadfast, when one speaks with the steadfast, one gains happiness and strength. O Hundred Blessings! If you delight in the steadfast, what is the reason? The Bodhisattva replied: The steadfast walk on the path of virtue, leading others also onto that path; they are free of harsh words, they act for the benefit of others; without deceit, adorned with discipline, they are fit vessels to establish benefit. Therefore I delight in the steadfast. Then the god Hundred Blessings again praised and said: On the path you have spoken, raise the supreme mind! The Bodhisattva replied: You have abandoned the faults of exhausting food, your mind is in harmony with the joy of giving; the petitioners are adorned with pure precepts, all these exist within me, thus I raise the supreme intention. Hundred Blessings said: Again here you have spoken well, becoming a source of precious treasures. What you have raised will be thus accomplished. For this noble speech, I also offer the supreme gift to you. The Bodhisattva replied: Among all the gods, you are the highest; with the supreme offering you have become the cause of my benefit. This supreme gift cannot be destroyed by gods or non-gods, it has been raised to you. Hundred Blessings, astonished and moved, said: If some beings wish to follow me in chanting, austerities, and difficult practices, I have come desiring to offer to you, why do you not wish to see me? The Bodhisattva replied: This is not from disrespect, nor from unwillingness to meet you. But if I constantly behold a form such as yours, supreme divine body, I fear that dwelling in quiet absorption I would weaken in my perseverance in difficult practices, therefore I dare not meet you. Having spoken thus, Hundred Blessings bowed, circumambulated, and disappeared from sight. Then in the heavens...
