At that time, hundreds of divine beings assembled, and countless hundreds of self-enlightened Buddhas, invited by the devas, came forth; many youthful sons of the gods with their retinues also arrived. The Bodhisattva, beholding them, offered veneration to those great sages. Thus, dwelling in the forest of arduous practices, delighting in endurance itself as adornment; without attachment even to food, nor desiring to behold even the lord of the gods, what need is there to mention gatherings of others? In this way, such one rejoices in solitude, establishing meditation and completing accomplishment. Moreover, in a past age, the Blessed One himself was born as the sole son of a great king. The earlier sons of that king were all destroyed by calamity and untimely death. In order to protect this child, the king placed him within an iron chamber, ornamented with precious jewels, and through the divination of auspiciousness and the guardianship of skilled ritual masters, he was saved, and so was named 'Son of the Iron House.' When he was born, the people of that land became endowed with happiness, their forms pleasing, with compassion and clarity of mind, virtues such as these causing all beings to be delighted. By the power of merit, he abided amidst grand festivals equal to the prosperity of the gods. At the festival of the Kumuda flower (blue lotus), he mounted a splendid horse adorned with jewels, silks, and banners, the finest of steeds, and rode forth. Surrounded by attendants beautifully adorned with garments and ornaments, with music resounding, he proceeded. People, gazing upon the prince, marveled in wonder, uttering blessings and rejoicing. By force of former habituation, upon seeing many kinds of festivities, he reflected thus: Alas! The world, bound by afflictions, abides in impermanence, its dwelling unstable, ever changing. Even this splendor of the Kumuda bloom must certainly perish. That beings dwell here, unafraid of birth, is indeed wondrous! All paths are barred by the lord of death; one should live without fear, delighting fully. Disease, old age, and death are hostile enemies, and though power may be great, none can resist them. Surely, this world must proceed to the far shore of decline. May this consciousness awaken to such truth.

In the sky, the mind is like vast clouds flashing with lightning, resembling strings of gold; like the roaring sounds of the great ocean; like torrents of rain descending, forming a grand composition. Though all things gather, they will eventually disperse. Thus, recognizing the impermanent nature of vessels and contents, no longer delighting in such spectacles, one returns to one’s own dwelling. Then he prayed to the king, requesting to go into the forest of arduous practice. The king, filled with deep love for his son, was greatly distressed, wept, and said: ‘My only son, why would we abandon you? Do you hold doubt or delusion toward me? If there is some harm from another, speak it, and I shall dispel it.’ The Bodhisattva replied: ‘Father, your love holds no delusion toward me, nor is there harm from another. It is simply that I fear death. Considering this, I saw there is no way to prevent it. Therefore I wish to go practice.’ He then explained in detail the various faults of death. The king said: ‘If so, since the fear of death cannot be removed, what benefit is there in holding the Dharma in the forest? Will not the Lord of Death come even there? Have not ascetics abiding in Dharma also died? Since all must die, what use is it to abandon the household for the forest?’ The Bodhisattva answered: ‘Whether in the forest or in the home, all—whether wrongdoers or Dharma practitioners—will die alike. Yet practicing Dharma in the forest, even if one dies, one will not fall into suffering of the evil realms but instead attain a good rebirth. At home, due to many faults, Dharma practice is difficult. Without Dharma, at death one gives rise to great suffering and falls into bad destinies.’ He expounded this fully. The king assented. Thus he abandoned the royal wealth and glory as if discarding grass, went into the difficult forest, accomplished the four meditations and the four immeasurables, gained reverence from the world, and at the end of life was born in a pure heaven. Therefore, the mind of meditation is accomplished through the path of freedom from desire, unattached, abiding in solitary seclusion, and gradually perfected.
