If one claims that because in some place no cause is seen, therefore no cause exists, or asserts arbitrary reasons for causation, this is mere words without reason. If one says “what is unseen does not exist,” then after the sun sets, though the solar disk still remains, due to conditions it is unseen—should we then claim it does not exist? Moreover, you seek happiness and reject suffering, relying upon the king for the sake of happiness, yet continually proclaim “there is no cause.” If truly no cause exists, then when I kill a monkey, what blame could there be? Your doctrine of “causelessness” has no strength. Thus I refuted them, and they then argued, “all things are created by Ishvara, the Lord.” I replied: O living beings, it is not reasonable for you to revile me. If you claim all is done by Ishvara, then even the killing of the monkey was done by Ishvara—why assign the fault to me? If you claim the monkey was spared by Ishvara’s compassion, then how can you proclaim Ishvara is the cause of all beings? Good people, if all is made by Ishvara, yet some things arise spontaneously without him, then what gain do you receive by worshiping and offering to him? If all great sins are also performed by Ishvara, then what virtue lies in honoring him? If what you do and what sins occur are not performed by Ishvara, then to assert “all is Ishvara’s work” is illogical. Moreover, is this Ishvara himself arising from his own prior nature, or created by another? If from his own prior nature, then before Ishvara there was no Ishvara, and so the claim that all things are his creation does not hold. If created by another, then he is like a slave without autonomy, and all is made by others—how can he be called “Ishvara, the sovereign”? If so, your statement that “though he did not create, he should be revered” is irrational. Abandoning reason and choosing the unreasonable, to say “all is Ishvara’s doing,” while imputing the fault of killing the monkey to me, is entirely mistaken. Thus I broke their pride, and told them: If you claim “all arises from previous karma,” then first establish the doctrine of previous karma and say so. If all is produced by past deeds, then your reviling me is not reasonable. For my killing of the monkey too would be fixed by past karma, not by my free choice.

Where indeed lies the fault? By former karma, just as forest fire consumes wood, I am not truly destroyed. If one says I have the sin of killing a monkey, then what I killed is not solely the old karma. If one says karma and its results are not connected, then all deeds would cease, and no one could attain liberation. If one says the causes of happiness—the virtues—produce suffering, and the causes of suffering—the non-virtues—become causes of happiness, then present acts being explained as caused by unrelated past karma would be reasonable. Yet the causes of happiness and suffering, cultivated in the present, can never be inverted; thus, past karma is not the sole cause of all. If this is so, new karma would not exist. If new karma is not established, how then could past karma be fulfilled? If one says everything is done by past karma, how then could the killing of the monkey be imputed as my deed? Thus, such words should not be spoken. Then, the one holding to nihilism laughed and said: ‘Why do you reproach me? If, as you claim, the external world ends in annihilation, then who, striving in virtue or vice, accomplishes anything? Even the wise should act simply according to their own ease. If so, on whom will the fault of killing a monkey ripen? Now, worldly people, thinking of the future, cultivate virtue and abandon vice, yet when their speech and actions are inconsistent, the fruition is unseen. If one, based on worldly conventions, abandons one’s own doctrine, then the doctrine one speaks of is meaningless. Such confusion and futility are like the babble of children without substance. Moreover, consider this: trees endowed with manifold qualities such as colors, though not made by karma, arise in their own time. If they are burned or cut, once destroyed, they never regenerate; in the same way, the entire world, once destroyed, will not arise again. What reason or proof is there for such a claim? It is evident that when causes and conditions assemble, things arise, and when they do not, they fail to arise. Thus, your talk of annihilation is merely empty words.
