As soon as he uttered the words, "Striving to transcend the earth," his body became completely perfect in every way. He became even more devoted and ordained, ultimately attaining the state of an Arhat. Furthermore, in a past life, a Bodhisattva was born into a wealthy royal family. He was handsome, knowledgeable in all fields of learning, and beloved and desired by everyone. However, seeing the faults of household life, when his parents passed away, he gave away countless riches from his home to mendicants, Brahmins, and the poor. He then renounced the world and lived in a forest, where he became accustomed to meditation, and thus became renowned for his fame that was in accordance with the Dharma. His father's friend, upon learning of this, said to him, "While you are still young, you have abandoned the wealth of your household. How can you enjoy living a life of poverty in solitude? It would be better to return to your father's house." The Bodhisattva then spoke of the faults of household life, which is like a prison, and the virtues of the forest, convincing his friend. Again, in the past, in the city of Champa, the son of King Gangamala, named Kumaragangamala, was the Blessed One himself. Skilled in the five arts and sciences, he requested permission from his father and went into the forest, where he cultivated meditation and supernormal powers. The five hundred sons of ministers, skilled in the arts and sciences, thought to themselves that they were unmatched in appearance and wisdom. Their archery teacher said, "The king's son who lives in the forest, you cannot compare to even a hundredth or a thousandth part of his appearance, strength, and wisdom." They wished to verify this, so they went to see him with their archery teacher. Upon seeing his extraordinary appearance, they thought that his other qualities must also be the same. They practiced celibacy in his presence, cultivating the four meditations and the five supernormal powers. Later, when he became a Buddha, the archery teacher was the current archery teacher Devadatta, and the five hundred youths of Vaishali whom he taught archery were the five hundred sons of ministers from the past. Devadatta praised and guided them to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One displayed the miracle of archery.

Through his deeds, all the faithful went forth and attained the state of Arhat. Once, five hundred merchants entered a great forest, where a fierce demon attacked them cruelly so that they had no way to survive. At that time, the Blessed One was a rishi endowed with the five clairvoyances and great power. He rescued the merchants, took their treasures, and returned them to their home. They rejoiced, followed the rishi, all went forth into homelessness, and developed the four meditative absorptions and the five superknowledges. Likewise, when the Blessed One was formerly a rishi, he protected countless beings from fears such as death, and established them in meditation and superknowledge—these merits being measureless, but here only briefly stated. Again, in a former life, he was a monkey. During a drought with no rain, a hermit dwelling in a monastery went forth. The monkey, being acquainted from before, accompanied him, spoke of the monastery’s praises and household faults, saying: “I cast my body into fire, now I dwell in the monastery.” The hermit took the monkey, saying: “If you delight in seclusion, remain as long as you wish.” Thus he stayed, rain fell, and trees bore abundant fruit. The hermit, grateful to the monkey, attained the five superknowledges. Again, in another past life, the Blessed One in the land of Mithilā (present-day Nepal) became a wheel-turning king named Great Deva. He ruled the kingdom in accordance with Dharma. Later, a white-haired prince was born, who renounced and practiced the pure conduct of a rishi, commanding his descendants to do likewise. Thus in Mithilā, only his lineage, for eighty-four thousand generations, lived by the rishi’s pure conduct. The last of them, King Mukhya, though enthroned, did not remain, but returned to Mithilā to spread the path of virtue, living as a rishi in pure conduct. Again, in a former life as the Brahmin named Radiant Flame, while abiding in meditation, even though surrounded by peacocks with feather ornaments, he was not distracted from meditation.
