Adorned with splendid and perfect beauty, graceful in form, they rise in the morning and rest at night. Their appearance resembles that of celestial maidens, and their qualities are like freedom from desire. The king had altogether eighty thousand women, who abided in meditative absorption. Just as the mind abides in equanimity, they thoroughly understood the particulars of meditation, as well as the distinctions between afflictions and virtues. The women’s wisdom comprehended all the specific differences of afflictions and virtues. When a woman had little wisdom but strong afflictions, the Dharma was taught to her so that wisdom might grow and subdue afflictions. When a woman had weak afflictions but great wisdom, the Dharma was shown to her so that she might abandon even the smallest afflictions. For women attached to desire, impurity and impermanence were taught; for those given to anger, loving-kindness and impermanence were taught; for those in ignorance, dependent origination and impermanence were taught; for those engaging in conceptual proliferation, mindfulness of breathing and impermanence were taught; for those clinging to characteristics, the absence of characteristics and impermanence were taught; for those grasping at self, emptiness and impermanence were taught; for those clinging to existence, the absence of aspiration and impermanence were taught. In this way, whatever afflictions they indulged in, were countered by their remedies. Women attached to desire cultivated concentration, practiced the path of purity, and were reborn in pure realms. Women given to anger practiced boundless love and the path of purity. Those attached to names and forms practiced the contemplation of the absence of names, and the path of purity. Those attached to existence practiced the mind of no aspiration and cultivated pure abodes. Thus all the eighty thousand women abandoned craving and were reborn in pure realms. Moreover, when the king came to be called ‘the reproacher of afflictions,’ through his power there appeared ninety noble women. Though all possessed beautiful forms, to behold them caused suffering. These women, seeing other women with their eyes, together with the karmic results of afflictions…

Because he had thoroughly understood the true nature of offspring and the results of karma, all afflictions ceased to arise, and he gained close knowledge even of the extinguished states. In this way, the king caused his ninety consorts to realize the nature of their own karma and defilements, and they, free from desire for the pleasures of the desire realm, were later reborn in the pure heavenly realms. Again, when he was born as the great King Lekthong, although he attained great longevity, wealth, happiness, and abundant prosperity, he did not become attached to them, but instead dwelled in meditative absorption, just as the discipline taught. Furthermore, in a former life, the Blessed One himself, while practicing as a sage in the difficult forest, once destroyed a village of five hundred wild men in the mountains and took their abundant food and wealth. At that time, one man was captured, and the others captured him to offer as a sacrifice to demons. When they began to prepare the offering, the man, terrified, prayed to the sage. Then a deity informed the sage, who went to that place and spoke a Dharma called “Delight in the Dharma” and taught them. As a result, the five hundred wild men renounced the household life in the presence of the sage, entered monastic life, and cultivated the four meditative absorptions and the five superknowledges. Later, in the time of the Blessed Buddha Shakyamuni, a butcher was about to kill a sheep to make offerings to five hundred bandits. The butcher prayed to the Buddha, who appeared as a deity. The bandits rejoiced, saying, “This is a divine body manifested to us,” and sat with folded hands. The Buddha said, “Offerings to gods are unnecessary; delight in the Dharma.” He then taught them according to their faculties and intentions. Because of this, the butcher obtained the result of not returning (to samsara). The five hundred bandits, upon experiencing the result of their karma, developed profound faith in the Buddha’s body, went forth as monks, and attained arhatship. The butcher, too, thinking, “If I had not had such a body,” renounced the household life and entered the Buddha’s teaching.
