I, drawn away from the path of evil, resolved to abide upon the path of virtue. In an instant, through miraculous power, I manifested an army of four divisions, fully armed, with armor and weapons, resounding with drums, conches, and human voices like thunder, appearing like the army of a divine king, enough to strike fear. The king of Kāśi, beholding this, was utterly terrified and thought: “To whom shall I seek refuge?” He then reflected: “That great and mighty Lion (the Bodhisattva in lion form) dwelling in this forest, by his strength in difficult practices, will surely protect me.” Just as one drives a horse toward the place where it dwells, so too did the king proceed there. The Bodhisattva called to him: “Come.” Thus the king sat beside him. Thereupon the army vanished. The king asked: “Where has the enemy force gone?” The Bodhisattva replied: “Great King, to subdue you, I showed a great miracle; truly, there is no army of a celestial king here.” O Great King, not only are enemy forces terrifying, but also the affairs of rulership are full of faults, with little happiness, ending in great fear, causing one to fall into hells and other evil destinies. Therefore, abandon this and go forth as a renunciant in the place of the peaceful forest. By showing these faults and the qualities of turning away from desire toward pure virtues, the king gained faith in the Bodhisattva’s miraculous power and in the Dharma shown, rejoiced greatly, returned his wives, ornaments, and chariots, and renounced the household, going forth into homelessness at the Bodhisattva’s side. By the Bodhisattva’s instructions, restraining his faculties, practicing austerities, he gradually attained the mind of meditation, abiding in the supreme bliss of peace. When the charioteer and others returned to the city, people, confused, asked: “Where is the king now?” They replied: “He has renounced and gone forth before the Lion.” Then the queen and all the retinue cried and chanted mantras. The ministers dispelled their grief and established the prince as king. Thus, one endowed with meditation may attain miraculous powers.

Thus, with the intent to tame beings, he expounded the Dharma, and therefore with reverence he honored the qualities of the Bodhisattva who acts for the benefit of all sentient beings. Once in the past, in a forest, there was a valiant ascetic skilled in explaining all scriptures, constantly teaching his disciples. He was the Blessed One, who had become a Buddha, dwelling among the roots of trees in meditation. At that time, when there was a drought without rain, the roots and trees withered, and the ascetics weakened, wishing to go to the city. The Bodhisattva then spoke of the faults of the city and asked: “Please give me whatever food you have, so that I may stay here and not let this forest perish.” When food was exhausted, the ascetics gathered there. Then, holding the earth-bowl, by miraculous power, in an instant he brought from a desolate place, where no pleasant sounds existed, food as delicious as nectar, and offered it. All became joyful and refreshed. Thereafter, each day he gave food. Then, by his true words, unmoved by desire, he said: “May the lord of gods cause rain to fall.” As soon as he said it, heavy rains poured, crops and trees flourished, and all were delighted. To them he preached the Dharma, turning them away from evil paths and establishing them in the true path. They praised him: “You formerly gave us food, now you give us Dharma, surely you will lead us to supreme good.” They entered into meditation. Again, once before, in the country of Varanasi (modern India, Varanasi), in a forest, the Blessed One was born as the chief of five hundred ascetics. By the power of his compassion, all who dwelt in that forest lived together harmoniously, without harm. One ascetic there, afflicted with wind-illness and weakened, with his thought turned toward affairs of the kingdom, was seen by a god with divine eye, who asked: “What kind of illness is this?” He replied: “The roots and herbs of this ascetic forest cannot pacify my disease; I need the milk of a cow.” Then the Blessed One manifested himself as a cow and said: “Drink my milk to cure yourself.”

Then, someone said: This abbot contradicts the Dharma, for though he is capable of difficult practices, he claims that sentient beings are unfit to live. O Bodhisattva, if you will not even eat the flesh of a single ox slain out of compassion for life, then if you became a king and slaughtered oxen, or destroyed harmless beasts with weapons, would that not oppose the Dharma? Where then has your compassion gone? Therefore, do not take delight in royal power, for kingship is the root of many faults and sufferings. If the mind is defiled, I too shall again suffer in the lower realms—so it was said. The abbot praised, saying: “You have known my mind,” and urged him to turn his thought. He asked: “When my mind is stirred in the realm of difficult women, how should I act?” The reply: The eyes, limbs, and face of women may appear beautiful, but when they age they no longer please; their nature is decay and impurity. Yet the ignorant, clinging, fall into great suffering. Thus was this Dharma taught. The ascetic then departed to another monastery, where under the guru’s instruction he attained the four dhyānas and the five superknowledges, and later returned. The great self was praised, honored with words of gratitude. — In former times, before King Śaṅkhin, there were two brothers: the “Seizer of sons” and the “Seizer-thief.” They went into the forest, attained the five superknowledges, and with magical power ascended the sky, honored by kings and all beings. At one time when another king departed, his daughter served the two. She desired the Seizer-thief, deceived him into intercourse, and he lost his magical powers. The Seizer of sons, knowing this, led him back from the forest, restoring him to the four dhyānas and five superknowledges. The Seizer of sons was the Blessed Buddha; the Seizer-thief was the black elephant Māra. That one, though having gone forth, was deceived by his wife into returning home. The Buddha again led him back, caused him to renounce, and he attained arhatship.
