One must certainly regard them as arriving at the place of welcome. Thus, they dug holes by the sea. After some time, they saw many large ships arriving at the seashore. Those Rakshasa women also arrayed their troops. The mantra practitioners subdued them with mantras, and the throwing masters mostly killed them. The remaining ones approached the feet of King Sinhala and said: "O Lord, we beg for forgiveness!" King Sinhala said: "I will forgive you by oath. If you leave this city and go elsewhere, and do no harm to my land, then I will forgive you." The Rakshasa women said: "We will do so, it is pleasing." They left that city, went elsewhere, and settled there. King Sinhala built a city there and resided in it, and from then on, it became known as the Island of Sinhala. That Rakshasa woman of that time, now at the time when the Shakya King Buddha attained enlightenment, was Madhu's daughter, the unparalleled woman. That unparalleled woman, with her beautiful appearance, pleasing to behold, and delicate bones, was unparalleled in the world, hence the name. Her father thought, "This daughter should not be given to someone for the sake of lineage, wealth, or learning, but should be given to someone as beautiful as she is." The father, named Kunturu, saw the Blessed One residing under a tree, exceedingly beautiful and pleasing to behold. "If this one is worthy of being the lord of Jambudvipa, what need to mention my daughter? This one shall be the groom of my daughter." Having thought thus, he told his wife, "I have found a groom for my daughter." Adorning his daughter with various jewels, he went with his wife towards the place where the Blessed One was residing. On the way, his wife, named Burma, said: "O Brahmin, I saw that great ascetic, subduing in various ways, entering for alms. The place where he stepped became red and elevated, and when he lifted his foot, the lower place also became elevated. This household should not associate with young men, one should abandon it and return to one's own home." Madhu said: "Alas! Burma, inauspicious one, you speak inauspicious words at an auspicious time. If one were to take him by means of ascetic practices, he would abandon and desire."

"They will become one who relies on offerings." Thus it was spoken. Then the Blessed One, departing from that forest to another, settled there and, seeing someone planting grass, said to Mādu's wife: "Good lady, this is the maiden’s garland-grass." The wife replied: "In the bed of attachment, it becomes disturbance; in the bed of anger, it becomes spears and fire; in the bed of delusion, it goes to destruction. This is truly a place of great detachment. For such household pursuits, if young men do not rely upon them, they will return to their own restraint." Having spoken, Mādu again recited the verses as before. Seeing the Blessed One’s footprints, he said to his wife: "Good lady, this is the trace of the maiden’s garland-grass." The wife replied: "The aftermath of one bound by desire will not be clear; the aftermath of one with anger will be profound; the aftermath of one deluded will be ruinous; but the aftermath of great detachment is like this. Such household affairs are spoken of like two feet lifted together." Thus Mādu again recited the verses as before. Then the Blessed One uttered a clear, illuminating voice, saying to Mādu: "Good lady, this is the pure voice of the maiden’s garland-grass." The wife replied: "The voice of one of desire is harsh and sharp; the voice of one of anger is rough; the voice of one deluded is confused; but the pure sound of Brahmā is the voice of the Buddha." Household pursuits are spoken of in this way. Mādu again recited the verses as before. The Blessed One, gazing afar at all and observing Mādu’s wife, said: "This is the sight of the maiden’s garland-grass." The wife replied: "The one of desire looks with flickering eyes; the one of anger looks like a venomous snake; the one of delusion looks as if imagining in darkness; but the one of great detachment looks as if upon a single tree." Thus household affairs are again spoken of. The Blessed One, seeing Mādu breaking the garland-grass, said: "Good lady, this is the breaking of the maiden’s garland-grass." The wife replied: "As one sees, as one acts, as one speaks and shows a pure face, all appear free from dust." For such household affairs, young men should not rely upon them.
