From folio 501 to 600. Even when it was said: “Harsh words, unpleasant to hear,” still, who could turn them into joy? Thus it was declared. At that time, among the eighty-four thousand bodhisattvas, not a single one became joyful. The Blessed One then reiterated this principle two or three times, yet none accepted it. Then our Teacher, the Blessed One, was called ‘Bodhisattva Blazing Diligence.’ Having assembled in that gathering, he rose from his seat, loosened his upper robe, placed it upon his right shoulder, knelt with his head touching the feet of the Buddha, and with folded hands at one side, he prayed: “Blessed One, for eighty-four thousand years I will never become discouraged, I will renounce all pleasures, and amidst all sufferings I will never give rise to a thought of complaint. I will go to the house of Prince Narpal (Treasure Glory).” As soon as these words were spoken, the three-thousandfold great-thousand world quaked in six ways, and from the heavenly palaces above, countless devas exclaimed: “Ah! Bodhisattva Blazing Diligence has donned the armor of great diligence. Excellent, excellent!” Thereupon, Bodhisattva Blazing Diligence went to the house of Prince Narpal, and stood at its gate. The great assembly of ministers, seeing him, became enraged, uttering abusive, harsh words, and hurled earth and stones at him, striking him with hands, sticks, and clubs. Though he saw, heard, and felt these assaults, Bodhisattva Blazing Diligence did not become agitated, did not give rise to hatred, anger, or aversion, but instead generated great strength of steadfast diligence, endowed with power and great compassion. Thus, after one thousand years, he entered the first gate of the king’s palace, enduring beatings, insults, and blows without faltering; after ten thousand years, he entered the second gate of the palace; after twenty thousand years, the third gate; and after seventy thousand years, he entered the sixth gate.

When eighty-four thousand years had passed, entering the seventh hall of the royal palace, the crown prince Norpal (meaning 'Wealth and Glory') spoke thus: “Venerable monk, what do you wish? What do you seek? What do you require? Speak it, and I shall bestow it to the fullest of my ability.” The prince, beholding the monk, felt astonishment, thinking: “How marvelous, that he endures tirelessly, never weary in meditation.” Then the great bodhisattva, Blazing Diligence, knowing the prince’s thought, declared: “Food, drink, clothing, possessions—none of these does this youth require. With a mind free from craving, I have come into this Dharma palace. The worldly guide, the great sage, has appeared, called the Supreme Stainless One, who shows the Dharma leading to the end of suffering. Whosoever hears it attains the deathless. Even if countless eons beyond number should pass, the Buddhas will arise by the hundreds of thousands. Now, in this darkened world, when one endowed with holy virtues is born, he becomes a lamp of light. But you, enamored of desirous qualities, are attached to form and enjoyments. Though delightful, the kingly power too intoxicates, and one cannot approach the Dharma-king. Wealth is impermanent, like dew upon the tip of grass, so has the Buddha declared. Therefore, though hearing the Dharma, one may still be deluded—this is not fitting for you, O prince. In this very hall you should enter supreme awakening, striving to liberate all beings. If you become the slave of desire, you will lead beings astray through your own intoxication. I abandon pride, dispel defilements, and now shall go before the Buddha. By arousing diligence and compassion for the world, in future times you will otherwise fall into deep remorse.” Having heard this verse, the prince abandoned pride, gave rise to profound reverence, bowed at the feet of Blazing Diligence, and said: “Forgive the harm I once caused. I renounce royal power and all objects of desire, and with a mind free of conceit I swiftly go before the Blessed One.”
