The leader Singha asked: “Why then do these women seem to guard the southern road so strictly?” It happened that a woman who had lain beside him, in drowsiness and indolence, fell from the great bed, stuck a sharp dagger at her waist, and went along the southern path. There she found many men chanting spells aloud: “Alas! Fathers and sons, and the whole land of Jambudvīpa will rejoice, for these abandon us!” Hearing this, she trembled for a moment, kept silent, then dispelled her fear and continued on the path. In between, she saw a great iron city, towering with lofty walls and massive gates. She thought there might be a small door, searched around, but found not even a mouse hole to enter. To the north she saw a great luxuriant tree, climbed it, and looked down into the city, where crowds of people gathered. She asked: “Why are you uttering such chants?” They replied: “We are merchants of Jambudvīpa. Sailing upon the ocean, our ship was destroyed by a host of water-demons. We clung to leaves and planks and crossed over, arriving on this Copper Island. Here the she-demons revealed beautiful forms, deceived us with sweet words, took us as husbands, and children were born. Whenever other merchant ships came, those demonesses devoured them all, flesh and bones alike, leaving not even scraps, only hair and nails were spared, and even the drops of blood spilled upon the ground they licked clean.” They added: “We who remain are but survivors, now dwelling in this Iron City.” The leader asked again: “O wise ones, do you not know of any means by which you and we might safely return to the human world?” They replied: “O wise one, we have no means. Should we attempt to escape from this Iron City, whether above or below, we would be reborn into second and third transformations, and thus cannot leave. But you have a means of liberation. The gods above have declared: ‘Alas! These young merchants of Jambudvīpa have already reached the fifty-fifth stage of training, and now proceed upon the path of enlightenment.’”

Alas! The merchants of Jambudvīpa, being yet youthful, on this fifteenth day of discipline entered into the path of purification. At that time, the Horse King, called ‘Possessed of the Power of Clouds,’ ate the fruit of the Sālu tree which was neither sown nor planted. Thus he became free from illness, full of happiness, endowed with strength and power, his belly satisfied. He raised his voice aloud, proclaiming: ‘I shall go to the other shore! There, someone will honor me! I shall happily and excellently reach the land of Jambudvīpa!’ Three times he declared thus. The merchants said: ‘We too shall go to the other shore! We too shall happily reach Jambudvīpa!’ When this was spoken, the merchants were held in mind by their leader. Then, returning to their own beds, they lay with their wives. At dawn, the leader arose and went to the gathering of merchants, and secretly said: ‘O wise ones, in the solitary grove there is something hidden, let it be spoken to me. Do not be overly intoxicated, and do not bring the children, boys or girls.’ As such, the merchants all gathered in solitude. The leader carefully examined and discussed, saying: ‘To escape these rākṣasīs, on the fifteenth day we shall enter the path.’ Then on the fifteenth day, they all entered the path and proceeded. At that time, the Horse King, seeing them eating the fruit, thought: ‘The merchants should offer supplication.’ The leader said: ‘As the assembly of beings has spoken, I understand their meaning; the time has not yet arrived. The Horse King ate the fruit, became strong and happy, and said he would go to the other shore. This is a figurative saying. We need not supplicate accordingly.’ Then the Horse King again ate the fruit of the Sālu tree, raised his voice and proclaimed: ‘I shall go to the other shore!’ All the merchants went before the Horse King, joined their palms and bowed, saying: ‘We shall follow you to the other shore! We shall go with you! We shall happily and auspiciously reach Jambudvīpa!’ At that moment, the Horse King said: ‘O wise ones, look at the women’s forms…’

They transformed a pleasant land into suffering, seizing their own sons and daughters, and spoke thus: “O Lords, Blessed Ones, please come here! May our household and wealth become your refuge and protection. These are your places of food and drink, your places of clothing, your places of rest, your pleasure groves, your forests, your ponds. Likewise, all the precious treasures of the world: jewels, pearls, vaidurya, white crystal, conch shells, gold and silver, the essence of gems, coral, cinnabar, and right-spiraling conches—all these are here. Please come to this place, rejoice together with us, and enjoy songs and dances. If we do not attend diligently, perhaps they will take away our sons and daughters. To this, you should think: ‘My wife, my sons and daughters, and even the places of food—all within the right-spiraling conch are mine.’ With such a thought, though already subdued, they will eventually fall, like a ripe fruit falling from the top of a tree. The women who come will be eaten; even hair and the like will not be spared. When nothing remains, even the ground moistened with drops of blood will be licked by tongue, mixed with earth, and consumed. At that time, from wives to right-spiraling conches, those who did not give rise to thoughts of belonging to me were not attached to my hair, yet they will go peacefully and happily to the human world. After having thus truly entrusted, some were borne on the back, some by merchants, some carried on the shoulder, and some attached to hair. Then the King of Horses, with the power of clouds, finally increased his bodily strength and vigor, ascending into the heavens. From the abode of the rakṣasas, the banners of discord were shaken, and the rakṣasas seized all the merchants of the world. They adorned themselves with beauty and ornaments, carrying boys and girls, and came here. The Lords arrived, the Blessed Ones arrived, and became our households, protectors, guardians, dwellings, islands, refuge, and armies of allies. As stated before: this is your place of food and so forth.
