Surrounded by eighty beings, with flowers, incense, and medicinal food as offerings, they went before the immaculate Thus-Gone One, bowed and made offerings, remaining before him in reverence and supplicating: Because of being urged by the unborn mind, my teacher, protector, has kindled the flame of diligence; though such is worthy of offerings, I cannot repay the benefit. I pray the World-Protector to forgive. Whatever reverence to the Dharma King I have failed to perform, today I confess all individually. May the World-Protector know my transgressions. For the sake of beings, generating compassion, I now fully enter supreme enlightenment and until I attain the supreme vow of awakening, I will not engage in heedless, unrestrained conduct. After saying this, the prince renounced kingship, surrounded by eighty living beings, seeking perfect enlightenment, going forth and fully entering the teaching of the Victorious One. The Thus-Gone One, knowing their thoughts, showed them the path of supreme awakening; all gained the patience of conformity. The prince Nor-dpal (meaning ‘Jewel Glory’) is in fact the bodhisattva of great compassion, Maitreya. Furthermore, long ago in the palace like a lion’s lair of the king, there was a king named ‘Lion-Mane,’ wealthy and ruling in accord with Dharma. His minister named ‘Lion,’ son of Renowned Hearing, had a rival over wealth; he took a lower-class wife and from her was born this Blessed One, as a boy named Sing-ga, handsome yet appearing gaunt. When grown he studied letters, mastered eight kinds of analysis. He was given separate houses for winter, spring, and summer, and maintained first, middle, and last wives. In the upper chamber there was no son, but because of her beauty he loved her. At one time he said to his father, ‘Let me enter the great ocean.’ The father replied, ‘My son, you have much wealth, like sesame and rice though you use it, it will not be exhausted; as long as I live, you should play and be happy; after I pass, you will accomplish the wealth.’

He said: 'So be it.' Then he once again requested to enter the ocean. At that time, the moment had come when the demon could not devour him, so he said to the boy: 'Do thus, endure all your fears.' Then, with the beating of a drum, five hundred merchants together entered the sea. Among them were the strong ones, the great swimmers, those who could ride the wind, and others with five kinds of livelihood skills, who also joined in preparing to enter the great ocean. The great ocean was vast, and those who did not know whether they could cross easily must bring onto the ship planks, masts, ropes, boat equipment, and swimmers as support, and thus embark. If the ship was broken apart by sea monsters or fish, they would each mount planks or swim with the swimmers, and by such means, surviving the ordeal, they would drift, carried by the waves, to the southern shore. Arriving at the Copper Island, there was a place guarded by a being called 'the young and beautiful rākṣasī,' who, with delight, protected the merchants whose ships were wrecked. There were two places: one called 'the Place of Auspicious Joy,' and one called 'the Place of Poverty.' Then, the banner of the Place of Auspicious Joy began to sway. The rākṣasīs, seeing this sign, said: 'Before long, the merchants’ ships of the human world will arrive, we must entrap them.' They went to the shore and saw the merchants floating towards them. Manifesting themselves in beautiful and elegant female forms, adorned with various garments and ornaments, they called to the merchants: 'O noble ones, come hither! We have no homes, we wish to share with you households and treasuries. Here are your food and drink, clothing, dwellings, beds, and all pleasures, as well as worldly treasures such as jewels, pearls, and vaidūrya, gathered in heaps coiled to the right. Please, with us, enjoy play, delight, and the singing of joyful songs.' Seeing this, some merchants became greatly enchanted and intoxicated. Yet the rākṣasīs said: 'Do not take the road to the South.' Because when beings develop attachment to the forms of women, they become ensnared in passion, with no other release. Thus, by these words, the rākṣasīs led the merchants across the ocean, and with them they engaged in revelry, singing, and dancing, and children were born. At that time...
