Venerable one, at that time, when a great sea monster blocked the ship upon entering the vast ocean, it said to me: “This is inauspicious!” and abandoned me. For this reason, please, with compassion, ask Singala to forgive me. The lord agreed, and he went before Singala and requested forgiveness on my behalf. Afterwards, wise one, you took the daughter of the King of Zangling, but since she was not truly a local woman, please be tolerant and let her go. Singala replied: Wise one, she is not the king’s daughter, but rather a demoness who came from Zangling. Then how did she come here? She told the story herself, so nothing more was said. Later, Lord Singala finally returned home, and the demoness, carrying the child, went to the royal palace like the Lion’s Hall, and sat at Singala’s door. When the people saw the child’s appearance, they recognized him as Singala’s son and said, “This is your son.” The demoness then said: You should know, this is indeed Lord Singala’s son. You ask me where I came from and who I am? I was the daughter of the King of Zangling, given as wife to Lord Singala. On the sea, being considered inauspicious, I was cast away, and thus I came here. Together with this child, I beg Lord Singala’s forgiveness. Then they went and spoke to Singala’s parents. The parents told Singala: She was indeed the king’s daughter, but since she now has a child and troubles, please be patient. Singala replied: Father and mother, she is not the king’s daughter, but a demoness from Zangling. The parents said: All women could be demonesses, but still, please forgive. The son replied: If you two delight in her, then let her stay at home, but I will go elsewhere. The parents said: Child, for your sake we thought to keep her, but if you do not want this, then why should we not send her away? Thus the two expelled the demoness. The demoness then went to the Lion-Mane King, before whom the ministers…

Someone reported to the king: "O King, a woman of such form and beauty is standing at the palace gate." The king replied: "Let her come in." Thus, she was brought inside. The woman’s appearance captivated the senses, and when the king beheld her, he was overwhelmed by desire. Joyfully he said, "Excellent!" and united with her. The king then asked: "Good lady, from where have you come?" She replied: "I am the daughter of the king of Zangling, a concubine of Singala. I came here by boat but was cast away and abandoned; now I dwell here without refuge. O King, please grant forgiveness to me and the young prince." The king ordered his ministers to summon the governor Singala. When he arrived, the king said: "Do not abandon this maiden; forgive her, and let her live with the young prince." Singala replied: "This woman is not a king’s daughter, but rather a demoness (rākṣasī) of Zangling." The king said: "Governor, indeed, all women are demonesses—so tolerate this one. But if you do not wish it, then give her to me." The governor answered: "She is a demoness; I will never approach her." Yet the king did not listen, and brought her into the queen’s household, placing her under his dominion. After some time, the demoness caused the king, the queen, and their attendants to fall into deep sleep, then carried them to Zangling among the host of demonesses. There she said: "Sisters, this is the beloved of Governor Singala. She has made Lion-Mane King and the queen’s retinue fall asleep. Come here, let us devour them together." They transformed their limbs and eyes, manifesting in great terrifying forms, and at night descended like the palace of Lion-Mane King, and devoured the Lion-Mane King with his retinue. At dawn, the palace gates did not open; people could not enter, and many corpse-eating birds gathered above the palace. Ministers, market folk, townspeople, and citizens assembled outside the king’s palace. This news spread everywhere. Hearing of it, Governor Singala immediately rushed forth alone, armed with a sword.

Then they entered and said: O wise ones! The king has been devoured by the rakshasi; let us deliberate on a plan. The ministers said: How shall this be done? One replied: Beat the drum and ascend to look. So they brought it, and the commander Siṅgala ascended, wielding a sword and struck. The rakshasis seized some by hands and feet and tore them apart, some seized heads and carried them off. Then commander Siṅgala opened the palace gates, and all entered. The ministers abandoned the royal palace, gathering the palace retainers, ministers, and the people, and said: O wise ones! The king and queen with their retinue have been devoured by rakshasis, and no youths remain; who shall be invested with kingship? Some said: One who has courage and wisdom should be chosen. Others said: None but commander Siṅgala has such wisdom and strength, let him be enthroned. Thus all agreed, and urged Siṅgala: Commander, accept the kingship. Siṅgala said: I am but a merchant by name, living by trade—what have I to do with rulership? They replied: No one else can rule, therefore accept. Siṅgala said: If you swear to follow my words, then I will accept. They answered: So shall we do, gladly. Then they adorned the city beautifully, and with great honor invested Siṅgala with royal power. King Siṅgala then summoned ritualists from foreign lands to widely propagate mantras, and also invited teachers of the Brahmin tradition from foreign lands, commissioning them to spread Brahminical teachings, assigning duties to the masters. O wise ones! The four divisions of the army should be prepared, embark on ships, and sail to the Copper Island to subdue the rakshasis. So the four armies were arrayed, placed upon ships, and sailed to Copper Island. At last they reached the shore of the ocean, and in order to shake the banners that marked the lairs of the rakshasis, they engaged in counsel. From these omens, the people of Jambudvīpa then…
