Indeed, for the sake of sentient beings, vows were made to aspire to be born in hell. In former times, during hundreds of aeons, countless beings as numerous as the sands of the Ganges were seen suffering in the hells. At that time, the Blessed One, in the stage of a bodhisattva, generated the great yidam, and assuming the body of a hell-being, for measureless aeons taught the extensive twelvefold scriptures to all sinful beings, thereby destroying the fruition of nonvirtuous deeds and making the hells empty, except for those still bound by craving. Again, in this fortunate aeon, for the purpose of liberating numberless beings, he appeared as the bodies of carnivorous beasts, monkeys, bats, foxes, nāgas, snakes, garuḍas, fish, turtles, tigers, deer, oxen, horses, and so forth, thereby benefitting those beings. Again, in this fortunate aeon, in the realm of hungry ghosts without limit, he assumed the body of a hungry ghost to bring benefit. He was born into butchers’ households, killing chickens and pigs, catching fish; or in families of wrong livelihood, becoming robbers and thieves. Although a bodhisattva manifests such acts of negative karma, he in truth commits no fault, for the sake of liberating beings he manifests such forms through the power of great vows, bringing welfare and happiness to sentient beings. Again, he was born in borderlands, engaging in non-Dharma through the gates of the three poisons, lacking faith in the Three Jewels and in karma and its fruits, not honoring parents, relatives, or teachers, showing such births in order to benefit beings. Furthermore, he manifested as women, as those with crippled bodies, as those overwhelmed by desire, hatred, and delusion, as those with jealousy or stupidity, as those with deceit or falsehood, as low-born, as servants, as naked heretics, proclaiming that there is no result of karma. In showing such births, by the strength of great aspiration prayers, he demonstrated such evil-seeming ways, but in truth brought liberation and happiness to beings, as stated in scriptures such as the *Intermediate State Sūtra*. Then Gangpo asked: In my former practice of a bodhisattva, I would give my whole body entirely to beings, making myself their servant and slave, allowing them to employ me in various tasks, and sometimes…

He was made to do various tasks such as disposing of urine and feces, as well as composting, disposing of soil, weeding, collecting grains and milk, collecting firewood, coal, fire, and water, etc. Afterwards, he would have the thought of "not doing these things again," but he does not remember. When he was sent to collect incense, flowers, food, fruits, etc., he does not remember not having gone afterwards. He does not remember having the thought of following after being made to do good things, and not following after being made to do bad things. Towards castes such as Brahmins, he did not have the thought of "following these people, not following these people," but rather followed whoever called him earlier. When he was made to do righteous tasks, he did not do them to the best of his ability, and he does not remember that those tasks were definitely not completed. As it is said in the scriptures. In the Vimalakirti Sutra, it says: "Good sons, in the past, I used great diligence and skillful means to benefit sentient beings and accumulate the resources for unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment. Good sons, I remember in past lives, for the benefit and happiness of sentient beings, I even gave away my body countless times in a single day. Good sons, in the past, for hundreds of thousands of kalpas, when I saw hungry and thirsty sentient beings, I cut off my own flesh, cooked it, and gave it as alms, but at that time, I did not give rise to anger or regret, but universally generated great compassion for those sentient beings." Thus, when Bodhisattvas are on the path, they don the great armor of the inconceivable, enter into the immeasurable practice of the six paramitas, and do great deeds for sentient beings. It should be known that diligence is immeasurable. This is the chapter on diligence. The manner in which the Blessed One, in the past when he was a Bodhisattva, completely sought the Dharma by giving away difficult-to-give objects, etc., is as follows: In a time when Buddhas had not yet appeared in the world, the Blessed One manifested as a non-Buddhist Brahmin, knowing all the sciences, subdued, afflictions.
