When the Tathāgata named “Meaningful Tathāgata” appeared, within his holy speech, the Blessed One himself, the monk called “Radiant Fame,” became firmly established in the Great Vehicle. Until he attained unsurpassed complete enlightenment, even if his skin, sinews, and bones should dry, and his belly, flesh, and blood be utterly consumed, he resolved never to abandon this diligence. Before that Tathāgata, he wrapped his body with linen, anointed it with sesame oil, and set it alight before the Tathāgata with a torch. As his body was consumed by flames, he chanted in verse: “Self-liberated, naturally arisen, the supreme of pure mind, free from faults, pride, and sins, may compassion arise for beings entering evil paths; O All-seeing, Supreme Refuge, please reveal yourself.” Thus he praised in verses. Moreover, in the past, the Tathāgata “Hundred Rays of Light,” manifested from Light, taught the Dharma, enabling countless beings to gain tolerance toward the unborn Dharma. In that succession, the monk named “Undamaged Eyes” became this very Blessed One. Through the emanations of the Tathāgata, skillful in knowing the minds of beings to be tamed, when that Tathāgata taught Dharma, he himself also taught, listened, and cultivated in stages. By practicing merely in this way, he brought innumerable beings to never turn back from unsurpassed complete enlightenment. Again, in the past, countless eons ago, in the other shore, there was the Tathāgata “Unharmed Renown.” In his holy speech, the Blessed One himself, as a bodhisattva called “Practitioner Teacher,” accepted a solemn vow, remaining unshaken. The manner of that vow was this: so long as beings in my Buddha-field have not become vessels for unsurpassed enlightenment, until then I will not manifest supreme Buddhahood. Likewise, beings born in my Buddha-field will swiftly gain omniscient knowledge, be freed from suffering, and fully enter the blissful path; all born there will abandon non-virtues and possess virtues; all beings will be irreversible from supreme enlightenment; and in that field, the three lower realms and the asuras will not exist…

In that realm, there are no marks of division, nor even the slightest sound of suffering. All beings born in that pure land, apart from abiding by the power of the Bodhisattvas’ vows, ultimately will reach the final end of existence, thus becoming perfected. By such vows their resolve is made firm. And that land further possesses many other virtues, which when cultivated, lead to enlightenment, whereby one realizes the complete purity of such Buddha-lands and the display of liberation. In the past, there was a king called “Pure Wisdom,” who also cultivated in stages before the Buddha ‘Immeasurable.’ He resolved, ‘I shall not seek to please the Buddha merely by names or ranks, nor by worldly wealth or ranks, but rather I long only for omniscient wisdom, conforming to the order of the Thus-Come Ones, so that by the swift path of direct knowledge I may benefit all beings.’ Again he vowed, ‘In the land where I shall become Buddha, let there be countless Buddhas, abundant and not scarce.’ Through such roots of virtue, in this auspicious kalpa, nine hundred and ninety Buddhas appeared. Thus, the Tathāgata Immeasurable, by cultivating pure stages of body, speech, and mind, generating infinite virtues, and dwelling firmly in deep resolve toward the supreme Dharma, brought forth a land vast and immeasurable, beyond all reckoning. Again, in the time when the Tathāgata ‘Boundless Light’ appeared, in that land, the Blessed One himself, then a Bodhisattva named ‘Majestic Radiance,’ became the leader of eighty billion Bodhisattvas. Skilled in methods, endowed with measureless virtues, he knew when to act for beings, when to teach Dharma, and when to go among beings to instruct them, always using profound skillful means to benefit all. This Bodhisattva looked upon the Thus-Come One Boundless Light, and as he traveled through Buddha-lands, wherever his feet were set down, that land made beings attain true enlightenment, subdued the hosts of Māra, gave rise to great delight in divine realms, and all those lands became radiant with increased brilliance.

Radiant light, like the colors of a rainbow, spread everywhere. Sentient beings, seeing this appearance, wondered: ‘From which direction does this come?’ Then, within the illusion-like appearances, all these pure lands were pervaded by the radiance of the Tathāgata. Those desiring to see the Tathāgata joined palms and prayed: ‘We wish to see the Tathāgata.’ By their voices and aspirations, they were able to behold the Buddha. Hearing the voice, they joined palms and uttered: ‘Please let us meet the Tathāgata.’ Then the Tathāgata manifested countless hundreds of thousands of emanations. Each being perceived only the emanation meant for them, not others. In one single day, by the mandala of light, the Buddha-land was filled with countless Bodhisattvas who became irreversible from awakening. Then the Buddha Infinite Light, by his powerful majesty, inspired the Bodhisattvas to develop great courage and diligence, and spoke: ‘Sons of the lineage, follow after my light. Wherever you see it dwell, know it as my Buddha-field.’ Then the Buddha emitted rays of golden light. By the power of miracles, they followed the light endlessly, for countless eons, yet did not see its end, and so grew weary. Then, within illusion, the Buddha appeared again and said: ‘Sons of the lineage, do not let weariness disturb your mind, do not fall into discouragement, but go on a little further.’ Then the Buddha Infinite Light, through miraculous power, removed their bodily fatigue and increased their mental vigor. Again, after countless eons, they beheld a precious jeweled tree, and beyond it saw yet more light. At that time, they arranged their robes, knelt with the right knee touching the ground, placed palms together, and supplicated the Buddha Infinite Light: ‘May my mind be free of stains, may I abandon all defilements. May you encompass all worlds with your mind. May your guiding light draw me in, following into this realm.’
