After making prostrations and offerings, the entirety of the sublime Dharma, the White Lotus of Dharma, was upheld and taught. By that root of virtue, the one who became a Buddha is precisely the Blessed One. In former times he was the bodhisattva named “Always Insulted.” At that time, had he not upheld the White Lotus Dharma, he would quickly have fallen into difficult lower realms. By upholding it, he swiftly attained Buddhahood. When known as “Always Insulted,” surrounded by many companions who mocked and harmed him, he generated thoughts of anger. Those beings, for hundreds of kalpas, even twenty asaṃkhyeya kalpas, did not hear the sound of the Three Jewels. For tens of thousands of kalpas, they experienced unbearable suffering, and then became freed from karmic obscurations. That very bodhisattva matured into unsurpassed complete enlightenment. Among his retinue, there were five hundred bodhisattvas such as Virtuous Protector, five hundred bhikṣuṇīs, and five hundred upāsikās, all of whom became irreversible from unsurpassed enlightenment. Thus, holding this Dharma is of great benefit. Even after the Buddha’s parinirvāṇa, one should uphold the classifications of the White Lotus Dharma, thereby attaining perfect enlightenment. So was it spoken. Again, in a past age, during the kalpa of the arising of flowers, in a world extremely pure and wondrously adorned, a Tathāgata appeared, named Blazing Effort. In that world, perfectly pure and marvelously adorned, beings were called “Lotus Maidens,” for all were born transformed from lotus blossoms. That Tathāgata taught his retinue the Dharma of diligence. That Blessed One was then the bodhisattva named Firm Armor. When he inquired about the way of beginning diligence, the Buddha explained the four aspects: initiation, exertion, distinct examination, and accomplishment. He taught the meaning of diligence extensively. The bodhisattva Firm Armor practiced diligence for countless years, attained supreme patience, was born before that Tathāgata, heard the Dharma, diligently practiced, and again passed through life and death, offering to eighty-four thousand Buddhas.

During the aeon of blossoming flowers, they arose where the Buddhas appeared and diligently engaged in effort, seeking all virtuous Dharma and practicing step by step. Through this diligence, countless hundreds of thousands of bodhisattvas were caused to advance, ultimately attaining unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment and becoming Buddhas, as stated in the Sutra of the Ocean of Wisdom. Furthermore, in the early times of the past, during the appearance of the Tathāgata Dīpaṅkara (Lamp-Bearing Buddha), in that world all gods and humans were born from lotuses, without names of father or mother, without śrāvakas or pratyekabuddhas, but all were bodhisattvas with strong devotion to the Dharma, minds sharp like tigers. Food, clothing, and necessities arose merely by thought, like the gods of Tuṣita. At death, they ascended seven times and manifested the Dharma of birthlessness and deathlessness, being reborn according to their wishes in the Buddha-field. The Buddha and retinue wore pure divine garments unstained by dirt. There were no disciplinary rules, for all were naturally endowed with great patience. The Tathāgata taught the Dharma, which all understood, attaining forbearance, dhāraṇī, and so forth. This Tathāgata was the King of Dharma, with no other king equal. When he gave prophecies to one hundred twenty thousand bodhisattvas, among his retinue was the bodhisattva named "Stainless, Pure Light," who reflected: If I have no superior qualities, why am I not prophesied? The Tathāgata, knowing his thought, said: Noble son, if you do not come into this world in the future, the Buddha Dīpaṅkara will give you the prophecy. The bodhisattva rejoiced, ascended into the sky, and in the presence of Dīpaṅkara Buddha received the prophecy: In a future aeon among the number of sands of the Ganges, I shall certainly attain omniscience. All Buddhas spoke this truthfully. After speaking thus, the Tathāgata named "Radiant Clarity" rejoiced and praised, and among all Buddhas the magically emanated King also came forth to inquire.

The classifications of Dharma: discipline, supernormal knowledge, wisdom, and the miraculous manifestations of prajñā—having heard them, one attained direct realization, and from the blazing fire received the transmission of scripture, thus it is spoken. Again, in the former inconceivably long past kalpas, during a purified kalpa, the world was vastly adorned, and the Tathāgata named King of Medicine abided for a lifespan of twenty kalpas. At that time, the Dharma Wheel was turned by the King called Precious Canopy, who ruled over the four continents with a thousand sons. Throughout five intermediate kalpas, that Buddha together with his retinue created portrayals with all delightful supports, and those thousand sons likewise practiced progressively throughout those five kalpas. Among those sons, this Buddha appeared as the prince Moon-Canopy, who went into solitude and contemplated whether there existed a superior offering than material gifts. Empowered by the blessings of the Buddha, he beheld a divine vision, wherein the gods proclaimed: ‘The offering of Dharma is supreme among all offerings.’ Upon asking what is meant by the offering of Dharma, the gods said: ‘Ask the Tathāgata, King of Medicine.’ The Buddha replied: ‘Noble son, the offering of Dharma is the profound sūtras of the Tathāgata—unlike the entire mundane world, difficult to realize, inconceivable, the storehouse for Bodhisattvas, entering into dhāraṇīs and pāramitās, displaying the wheel of Dharma that does not turn back, praised by all Buddhas. To uphold, recite, contemplate, and integrate them—this is the offering of Dharma.’ Thereupon, Prince Moon-Canopy attained patient acceptance in harmony with Dharma, and with garments and ornaments offered to the Buddha. Joyfully grasping the sacred Dharma, he prayed for blessings, renounced the household, and began diligent practice. Before long, he attained direct knowledge, dhāraṇīs, and fearlessness. Thus, after the passing of that Tathāgata, he turned the Dharma wheel as that Buddha had turned it, teaching Dharma for ten kalpas, maturing countless sentient beings. Such was it also in the ancient times.
