Then I knew that this was something I had not heard or seen before. Thus, he caused many living beings to hold such sinful views. This was heard by the great virtuous one, Udapala's Face, who thought: If I do not liberate these beings from sinful views and place them in right views, then my being a virtuous one is meaningless. In the future, when I become a Buddha, how will I be able to save these suffering beings? With such a firm determination, and with the power of compassion, he asked the Tathagata Light of Peace, Fragrant Manifestation of Glory, and surrounded by hundreds of thousands of living beings, he traveled through the villages on the borders and the rocky places, turning beings away from sinful views and placing them in the three vehicles, and by teaching the Jewel Crest Dhāraṇī to women, he transformed them into men. All of them offered themselves to that Buddha and became monks. The Fallen Youth thought: Udapala's Face will take away my retinue, I will be a demon in that Buddha's realm, creating obstacles from the womb until he sits under the Bodhi tree, causing him to fear, and even after he attains enlightenment, I will destroy his teachings. Thus he made a vow. When the virtuous Udapala's Face made such a vow, the great powerful one diligently persuaded him, causing him to have faith, abandon sinful views, confess his sins, and causing him to generate the mind of Bodhi, the Fallen Youth was subdued, faith arose, and with great compassion, he prayed: When will you become a Buddha, may you then prophesy my unsurpassed Bodhi. As it is said in the "Jewel Crest Dhāraṇī Assembly." The consort goddess of that time was the Bodhisattva Maitreya, and the so-called Fallen Youth was this sinful demon, as he later vowed to be prophesied for Bodhi, so he was prophesied. Furthermore, in the past, the Bhagavan himself, in this Jambudvipa, transformed into a king named Righteous One, who had faith in the Mahayana Sutras, and without stinginess or jealousy, taught the Dharma and helped the poor and the helpless. At that time, there were no Buddhas or Pratyekabuddhas living in the world, so that king for twelve years,

Between the two, the Brahmins acted as attendants, arranging whatever implements were desired. The king said: “Ah, Teacher, you should arouse the supreme mind of enlightenment.” He replied: “O King, enlightenment has no defining characteristic, and the Mahāyāna sūtras declare the same.” The king then developed faith in the Mahāyāna. Even if a Brahmin who upheld the Mahāyāna sūtras were slain, by that condition he would not be born in hell. Thus the protective power of the Mahāyāna sūtras is immeasurable. So spoke the Blessed One. Again, in former times, when the Buddha ‘Sound-Giver’ appeared, there was a king named ‘Glorious Voice’ who built many stūpas to honor him. At that time, the Blessed One was known as the bodhisattva ‘Joyful Giver’. Wrapping his right hand with cloth, he placed oil within a lamp, ignited it, and offered it to the Thus-Gone One. That lamp outshone hundreds of thousands of others, its brilliance pervading Ganges-sands of worlds, shaking the earth, and causing showers of offerings to fall across the Buddha-fields. That bodhisattva, unchanged in form, abiding in the meditation of equality free from elaboration, with melodious voice, led the assembly to vast understanding. Then the gods offered their worship. King Glorious Voice saw this and, together with eighty queens and hundreds of thousands of attendants, leapt from the palace roof to approach the bodhisattva. Yet their bodies suffered no harm, and they beheld the bodhisattva’s flaming hand. The king cried out loudly in sorrow and spoke in verse. Then the bodhisattva Joyful Giver declared: “For one without hands, that is not truly a lack of limbs; but for one without morality, that indeed is an incompleteness. This decayed body is beyond the grasp of thought as a field of generosity, yet it is the altar universally worshipped by the world. With this I now make offering to the Thus-Gone One.” Having spoken such verses of truth, the earth quaked, and his hand was restored as before. That monk Joyful Giver, the woman who saw him at that time, immediately gave rise to deep faith.
