If it arises, one must act carefully and diligently to bring about peace; likewise, wherever precious substances are displayed, where water is cleansed, or where one gazes upon directions and constellations, these acts called ‘wandering and observing’ are guided. Those wanderers, hearing that within the ocean there are countless jewels, developed desire for wealth, and thus many embarked upon ships, becoming merely worldly beings of the lesser path. But the shipmaster instructed them not to speak in praise of the ocean, but rather to recount that within the ocean dwell giant fish, waves, abysses, water-serpents, coiled creatures of the deep, black winds, pirates, and many obstacles; and he warned: ‘If you seek to perish, so that your parents and others may never again see you, then proceed thus.’ Therefore, heroes were few, and attendants not many, so the multitude withdrew. Thus, after three warnings, the ship was drawn by three ropes, hauled by a great elephant, and carried to the island of treasures. The wanderer said: ‘On this jewel-island are great jewels and corals alike; examine and select them.’ Then there appeared a demoness, called ‘Strong and Beautiful Maiden,’ who led beings astray, yet one must not follow her. There also were intoxicating tree fruits, which, if eaten, caused seven days of stupor—thus, beware. Non-human beings here could remain seven days, enduring so; but beyond that, without achieving their goal, they would be expelled back to sea. Thus, they restrained themselves with vigilance, while a virtuous wealthy man filled his ship with jewels, returned peacefully to the human realm, and performed great acts of giving. In this manner, six times it was accomplished, and in the city of Vārāṇasī (modern Varanasi, India) he enacted vast generosity. At that time, in another land, five shipmasters ventured into the ocean but could not sail successfully, their purposes unfulfilled. They thought: ‘The great shipmaster Yig-ga (lover of wealth), renowned for great merit and power, by his might may enable us to obtain treasure.’ So they supplicated Yig-ga. Then Yig-ga replied: ‘Alas, by the very nature of the ocean, seven ships may not succeed. None among you can accomplish seven voyages, yet I alone feel compassion for you.’

At that time, a person named “Mapa, the Perfectly Accomplished,” guided five captains into the great ocean. They traveled to the Isle of Precious Treasures, gathered many jewels, and returned, boarding their ship again. While still at sea, they thought: “We are uncertain whether we will safely reach the far shore.” So they filled chests with jewels, bound them to their waists, and said to the merchants: “If the ship fails in mid-journey, rely upon my body.” Later, as expected, the ship was wrecked by the waves of the sea, and the five captains relied upon the body of Vigraga, the courageous one. Vigraga thought: “I am still alive, yet these people cannot cross the ocean on their own. The ocean is the pure, majestic abode of the Nāgas, where corpses cannot remain. If I die, they will be able to pass across.” Then he said to them: “Be steadfast and bring forth great joy. I will ensure you cross the sea safely, without danger. Once across, divide the jewels tied to my body among yourselves, and sustain seven generations of life thereby.” Having said this, he made a vow toward unsurpassed complete enlightenment, and with a sharp sword, cut his own throat. The Nāga lords and their retinues joyfully carried his body to the seashore, cast it upon the plain, released the jewels from his corpse, and divided them among the survivors, who then made offerings with his bones. Later, these five captains, in the lifetime of the Blessed Buddha, became the five bhikṣus, the first to be liberated from the ocean of cyclic existence, receiving the karmic fruit of great bodhi resources, attaining final accomplishment, and dwelling in the bliss of Nirvāṇa. Thus the Buddha spoke. Furthermore, the Buddha said that in a previous life, this courageous captain was known as “The Great Hero,” who was the wealthy son of Śroṇaka. At that time, he journeyed with five hundred merchants along the desert road, when a demon called the “Serpent with Poisonous Mane” assumed the form of a Brahmin to obstruct the path, preventing them from passing through, and he himself fell into great suffering…
