Merchants, constantly shooting and plundering with bows, thereby gained much wealth; in the same way, they inflicted harm even upon the lives of those without wealth. At that time, a certain lay follower, for slightly violating the precepts, was brought before five hundred ministers and subjected to beating and striking. Those ministers, upon hearing, said: “This lay follower is truly virtuous,” and thus released him without harm. Among them, one monk was that very lay follower, who was in fact the Blessed One himself. Therefore, it is shown that a bodhisattva, even from countless eons ago, will never forget even the smallest kindness, remembering it until the time of perfect Buddhahood. The Blessed One spoke thus. Again, in the distant past, in countless eons, the Blessed One was named ‘Leader of a Caravan,’ who, together with his companions, was skilled in writing, crafting, calculation, the terminology of trade, and the sixty-four arts. There, one companion, being young, wished to travel elsewhere, and so was beset by dangers: conflicts with others, troubles of herding, hazards of water dwellings, scarcity of food and drink, perils of hostile abodes, dangers of thieves, great ships sinking into the ocean, terrors of demons, and many harms from which he could not escape. That youth did not know that his parents’ property was shared, nor did he recognize the nature of his own suffering. Not understanding that this was not Dharma, he was deceived. Others, showing him abundant goods as proof, urged him, saying: “Do you not see? As previously spoken, such great wealth should not be disregarded.” Hearing these words, he wavered in mind and was thus persuaded by his companions. The wealth accumulated at present is likewise the cause of suffering. Therefore, he said: “I myself shall rightly collect and preserve the wealth.” Speaking thus, he addressed his parents: “Father, mother, I shall engage in commerce, able to carry out the duties of a caravan leader. I shall not go elsewhere. To travel elsewhere brings immeasurable dangers, so do not go. For seven generations our household has had abundant wealth without shortage. Let us remain here and enjoy it without wandering abroad.” Thus he spoke.

If the practices of the clan are not applied today, then what they have established I will not gladly use; instead, I myself shall go forward—so he declared. His parents did not strictly forbid him, and he entered the ocean, carried by the wind to the Island of Precious Jewels. Because he lacked the wish-fulfilling jewel, he filled his boat with goods and returned. While crossing the ocean, when he bathed in its waters, the great jewel tied to his hand fell into the vast sea. At once, he grasped his water vessel and, with mighty resolve, thought, “I shall cross the ocean to retrieve the wish-fulfilling jewel.” No sooner had he thought this than countless hundreds of thousands of gods came to his aid, and wind and fire also became his companions, enabling him to draw the water. Then the sea deity spoke: “This ocean is boundless, inexhaustible; it is not like a small sea that can be measured. Friend, how could one ever cross the ocean as if measuring the path in the sky?” Yet he replied again to the gods: “Gods, the ocean is not truly infinite. The ocean can be measured and fathomed. But my diligence is boundless, beyond measure. With it, I can indeed cross the great ocean. The sea gods rely upon my strength; the gods of the sky depend on the heavens. The measureless gods are my companions: they blaze like fire, they burn, and likewise they become the wind. When I scatter water into the sky, I see that there are no travelers there. The host of gods are my companions. Illusory waters burn and dry up; the illusory wind is my friend. There is no fear in crossing the ocean. If the ocean does not return my precious jewel, I possess the power of merit. My merit is the Buddha, the supreme Dharma that is free of elaboration and truly arises, and the noble assembly of monks, the precious Sangha. They belong to me, not to the sea gods.” Thus he spoke. Then the sea deity replied: “Noble son, your words are certain. Indeed, you are endowed with diligence and strength. You shall gain the jewel and should offer it to the Three Jewels.” Having spoken thus, he received blessings. Moreover, long ago in the land of Vārāṇasī, there was a householder named So-tsi, skilled in arts, who transformed all wealth into gold and filled vessels with it...
