Thus, all the harm he had suffered was pacified. There, the son of the Brahmin caste, Gautama, and the ascetics such as Marici, having heard that he had given such precious things, came there from the forest. The lotus goddess also followed Marici himself, and seeing the king become like that, she fell to the ground. Then, the gods of the sky praised the king's fame, causing it to spread in all directions. At that time, the king's prince, together with the ministers, came to the king's presence, and seeing the king's body soaked in blood like clothes, fallen on the ground, they wailed and cried, saying: Alas, sacrificing one's own life for the sake of others! The ascetic of Marici also looked at that ruler with tearful eyes, saying: Alas, you disregard your own life, abandoning your body like this, what fruit do you wish to obtain? Why do you not have a sorrowful expression? The king, enduring the fatigue, wiped the blood from his face and said: Ascetic, I have no other wish, I only wish to liberate the sentient beings of samsara. There is no displeasure whatsoever in giving away the body. If what I say is true, may my body be restored to its original state. As soon as he spoke, together with the jewel on his crown, his body was restored to its original state. At that time, Brahma, Indra, and other gods, and all the ascetic sages, requested the king to continue to rule, but he did not agree. Afterwards, the lotus goddess and the ascetic again requested, together with the prince, requested the king to ascend the throne. There, the previous Pratyekabuddhas also descended from the sky, illuminating all directions with light, saying: Having abandoned the body for the sake of others, etc., you have done many ascetic practices. Now it is not appropriate to be indifferent to the suffering of the people who have been separated from you for a long time. The king also thought that it was indeed so, and returned to his own palace from the sky, and lived happily with the prince and the queen, and ruled the country for a long time, and performed extensive virtuous deeds in accordance with the Dharma. Again, in the past, in the teachings of the Buddha named Gaṇapati, the Blessed One...

There was a monk named 'Radiance of Harmonious Sound,' who expounded the profound Dharma of Emptiness. Through his distinguished qualities of form, discipline, meditation, and wisdom, he was revered by princes and kings. Yet, a thousand other monks, stirred by jealousy, became agitated. Then a prince slew five thousand beings in his defense, claiming to uphold the teaching of profound, objectless emptiness. At that time, monks attached to appearances said: “If we kill this monk who speaks non-Dharma, it will become merit,” and so they came bearing weapons. The monk Radiance of Harmonious Sound bowed to the Buddhas and said: “If these teachings of emptiness are true, then by the power of truth, let these weapons become mandala flowers.” Instantly, the weapons turned into flowers of a mandala, and the great earth shook. The armed monks became terrified and astonished, unable to approach. A hundred lay disciples offered worship and listened; to them he expounded the Dharma of emptiness. Yet, many opposing monks continually mocked and insulted him with harsh words, but through the strength of patience, he was never overcome, and he long continued to teach Dharma for countless beings. Again, in a former life, the Blessed One was the Nāga King named 'Drum' (*Rnga*), with two brothers: 'All-Delighting' and 'Near-Drum.' When they went to the Nāga land called 'Sound of Drum,' its ruler became angry, breathing forth fiery smoke, and reviled them with harsh words, driving them away again and again. 'Near-Drum,' in anger, began to destroy the entire city. But the great Nāga 'Drum,' by words of excellent teaching, pacified his wrath and caused faith to arise in 'Near-Drum.' With his words of Dharma, he also brought benefit to countless beings. These verses appear clearly in the 'Verses of the Nāga King Drum.' In another lifetime, there were Nāgas named 'Ngar-Ngar' and 'Near-Ngar,' whose story was similar. And again, as a great elephant with six tusks who guarded the earth, when a hunter shot him with a poisoned arrow, the elephant’s mate rose up to trample and kill the hunter in revenge. But he restrained her, turning her away from the desire to kill.

With a reverent mind, he gave away his own tooth. Once, in an ancient time, in a forest monastery, there was a mighty monkey king. At that time, a disobedient monkey, having great compassion and knowing the clear samādhi free from anger, was fearless. Toward this great courageous one, many beings came to harm him in various ways. When the great monkey was resting in easeful sleep, the mischievous monkey suddenly leapt upon his back, sometimes riding him, sometimes—being hungry—blocking his way to food, sometimes scratching his ears with sticks, sometimes throwing him into the water, then mounting his head and covering his eyes with both hands, sometimes striking him with a stick as if in the manner of Yama’s punishment. Yet the Bodhisattva did not become angry; he endured all as if they were benefits, without anger or displeasure. Then, a demon (rākṣasa) seeing this, unable to endure, wishing to test his heart, said to the great monkey: ‘Wait a little! Is this monkey mocking you? Then is it that you were defeated by ornament, or that you had a trace of fear, or that you know me to be powerless? Why do you let yourself be so insulted? Ha! You can crush a mountain of copper, shatter rocky peaks, your body is strong, endowed with complete power and might, able even to subdue lions. This wicked-natured monkey cannot be tamed. If you treat him with compassion, he will only become more arrogant. Better to destroy him utterly with your fangs or horns!’ The Bodhisattva replied gently: ‘This monkey is weak and always deluded. Knowing this, I am fit to endure. For those of weak power and deluded action, patience is the proper virtue. Therefore, though he uses insult as his method, I shall endure it, and will not let my practice of patience be diminished.’ The demon said: ‘If that is so, then you will never escape his harm.’
