Having seen what is beyond one’s power, one generates profound devotion, confessing even unacknowledged faults, offering and practicing step by step. At that time, no attachment arises toward those things. In this way, with faith, confessing misdeeds, following the strength of the sages’ patience, one arouses the supreme and unsurpassed bodhicitta, abiding in the teachings of the Buddha. Thus, all such practitioners, as in former Buddhas, fully transcend suffering. At that time, when in practice great demonic obstacles appear, they are indeed blessings of the gods. Likewise, if immeasurable afflictions arise, one should not think of anger but endure them; if hardships arise for the sake of Dharma, they occur when seeking Dharma; if profound meanings bring hardships, they arise when applying wisdom. These illustrate patience: by such examples, patience is shown to be the way toward the boundless perfection. This is the stage of patience. Furthermore, in the past, in countless kalpas beyond, in the “Delightful Kalpa,” there appeared the Thus-Gone One “Immaculate Radiance.” At that time, the world was called the “Peaceful Realm.” That land was endowed with immeasurable abundance of bliss, and beings there had life spans of eighty-four thousand years. Then there was a prince named “Jeweled Banner,” possessing the supreme form, enjoying splendid prosperity, but through pride, he did not approach that Buddha, nor pay homage in sequence. The Thus-Gone One saw this prince and declared: “This one has ripened roots of virtue and shall surely attain the unsurpassed bodhi with vast causes and conditions.” Yet, if this prince clings to wealth, pleasure, and glory, and through arrogance does not come before the Thus-Gone One, if someone persistently exhorts him, he may eventually come before the Buddha. Thus, among the eighty-four thousand bodhisattvas, from among your lineage, some for countless aeons without discouragement shall go to Prince Jeweled Banner’s house, abandoning all joys, taking upon themselves all sufferings. At the least, they may become universal teachers, or teachers of true Dharma, or even without gaining a teaching seat, they will still endure insults and harsh words. Pages 401 to 500.
