Pages 401 to 500 Pages 401 to 500 Why not go to the forest? If you are not allowed to go for asceticism, why not go to fight enemies and armies? Seeing the merits of home and the faults of asceticism and the forest is a perverted view. If I have great merit, then you should follow me and renounce! Worldly friendships are mostly unstable like the behavior of dancers, and there is no certainty. If you cannot bear to part with a steadfast mind, then with rational actions, in the forest of asceticism, preventing those who want to renounce in an unreasonable way, you should entice them with extremely gentle words, go to the forest of asceticism yourself, be mindful of virtue, perfect discipline and asceticism, and practice meditation. Thus, even for the words of a person who proclaims to have merit when they do not, those who have knowledge will not abandon them, let alone obtain any merit and not let it be lost? Like that, proclaiming to have merit with the names of monks and lay practitioners, as well as practitioners and realized beings, examine yourself, thinking that people expect this of me, I must not deceive them. You must feel ashamed until you have adorned yourself with those merits, know that this is the biography of a Bodhisattva. Also, in the past, in the city of Varanasi (modern Varanasi, India), there was a king named Brahma-datta, who was rich and had great wealth. There was a queen named Matchless Mother, who was beautiful and beloved by the king. At that time, on the south side of Mount Snow, the Lord himself transformed into a golden peacock king, with a bright body and limbs, a jewel-like beak, and five hundred attendants following him. Once, the peacock king crowed over the city of Varanasi in the middle of the night, and the queen Matchless Mother, who was staying on the roof, heard it and said to the king: Whose is this sound that is so pleasing and loving? The king said: Goddess, I have not seen it either, it is from the snowy

It is said that on the south side of the mountains, there is a peacock king named 'Appearing as Gold,' and it is said that its voice is melodious and pleasing. The queen said: 'Please bring that divine peacock king here.' The king said: 'How can one see that which flies in the sky?' The queen said: 'If I do not see that peacock king, I will die.' The king, being in love with the incomparable queen, said: 'I will summon hunters and bird catchers, wait for a while.' Then he said to the hunters and bird catchers: 'Go and capture that peacock king and bring it here! If you can capture it, good, but if you cannot, all of you will lose your lives!' Then those hunters and bird catchers, fearing for their lives, took bird nets and traps and went to the south side of the snow mountain, and spread nets and set traps in the direction where the peacock king lived, but wherever the peacock king looked, the nets would break and the traps would be cut, and after seven days, they were exhausted, but they could not catch the peacock king. Then, that peacock king felt compassion for them and said: 'You who live on wild vegetables, why are you toiling and wandering in this direction?' Those people replied: 'Please know, peacock king, that King Tsangpa-byin (King Given by Brahma) has commanded us in this way, and we are striving in this way for fear of losing our lives.' The peacock said: 'I cannot be caught by traps and nets. If King Tsangpa-byin wants to see me, then clean the city and decorate it with ornaments. Come here on the seventh day with an army of four divisions (elephantry, cavalry, chariots, and infantry), and I will go there.' Those people listened and reported to King Tsangpa-byin, and the king decorated the entire city as instructed, adorned with vehicles of seven jewels, and went with the army to the south side of the snow mountain. The peacock king, appearing as gold, was placed on the jeweled chariot. When its voice arose, the king and the army were overjoyed and welcomed it with great respect, and went to the city of Varanasi (now Varanasi). When the peacock's voice arose at the gate of that city, it spread throughout the entire city. All who lived there were very happy and came to see it. There
