In a place where many wild animals dwelt, there was a beast of majestic and most beautiful form, golden in color. At that time, with keen intelligence, it avoided the snares and traps laid by hunters, and like a parent, it guided and nurtured the many beasts that followed it. One day, it saw a man being swept away by a fierce river, reciting a mantra as he was carried by the waters. The beast rescued him from the river. The man said: “You have saved my life. How can I repay your kindness? Please command me.” The beast replied: “Do not speak of this to anyone. That itself is the repayment. Even if you were to kill me and eat my flesh, it would not matter, for others are attached to this body. You should protect your own virtue and qualities, for when friends cling with deep attachment, true happiness is never found.” The man then bowed and departed. Later, the queen of that land’s king dreamed: a resplendent beast sat upon a throne, teaching the Dharma to the king and his retinue. She told the king: “This is auspicious; it must be sought out.” Thus hunters were sent forth with the promise of forty villages and beautiful women as reward. The man once saved by the beast, seized with desire, said: “I have seen it.” He then led the king and his army to that place. The army surrounded the forest, and he, together with the king, entered the woods and pointed out the beast. The beast did not flee but fell to the ground. The king, desiring to seize it, shot arrows, but the beast circled the forest, realizing escape was impossible, and spoke in human speech: “Great King, grant me but one question: who told you that I dwell in this dense forest?” Astonished, the king pointed with his arrow to that man. The Bodhisattva recognized him and carefully recounted why such conduct was improper. The king asked: “Is it true what he said?” Ashamed, the man confessed it was. The king, enraged, reviled him and prepared to shoot him down. But the Bodhisattva stood between them, saying: “Great King, if you kill this man, what great purpose will it serve?”

That which was driven by his enemy has been destroyed by ill repute. Those without merit will also be destroyed in future lives. Treasury of compassion, please show the path, and I shall accept your words with the crown of my head. The king praised that deer with respectful words, invited it to the palace, and taught the Dharma. The king, ministers, consorts, and all the people of the city developed faith, practiced the Dharma, and granted fearlessness to the deer and all birds. Furthermore, in a previous life, the Blessed One himself was a hermit named Conduct in the realm of practice. The evil demon, having transformed into a valiant figure, reviled five hundred men, and for five hundred years, without ceasing, followed that hermit, reviling him day and night. At all times, whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, they spoke unpleasant words, uttering harsh and evil speech. However, that hermit, regarding them with loving-kindness, did not generate even a single thought of wrongdoing, but viewed them as virtues, thinking, "I am striving for unsurpassed enlightenment for the sake of taming all difficult-to-tame beings. Therefore, I shall first lead these beings to peace." Thus, he remained in a state of loving-kindness. Furthermore, in the past, he became a non-Buddhist hermit named Strength of Patience. He vowed, "I shall not generate hatred towards sentient beings." At that time, a demon named Evil Intent, intending to destroy and reverse the hermit's Dharma of patience, sent a thousand men skilled in reviling, constantly reviling him with harsh words, false accusations, and various evil words that should not be spoken, in all situations such as walking, standing, sitting, lying down, and eating, for eighty-four thousand years. When that hermit entered the city, they poured urine on his head and into his begging bowl, scattering it on his body and clothes, and struck his head with a dust cloth. However, he had no anger or resentment in his mind, nor did he speak of the wrongs they had done, nor did he look at them with angry eyes, nor did he say even the words, "What wrong have I done?" but generated a mind of loving-kindness. The strength of that hermit was destroyed.
