Thus it was said and thus it was done: A queen gave birth to a son, whose features were auspicious and whose radiance rivaled the moon. He was named “Moon.” This son was in fact the Blessed One himself. The other thirty-four queens also each bore a son. One day, when Prince Moon had reached the age of eight, he attended the masters of the king. In contests such as wrestling with wild beasts, Prince Moon surpassed the other princes in majesty and strength of arms. The king therefore appointed him as regent and granted certain lands to the other young princes. Prince Moon, together with the other princes, traveled throughout the land and encountered a great wealthy man named “Brahmin Dumba-dzin.” Because of his name, he possessed all kinds of auspicious possessions. Then Prince Moon thought: ‘My father is only a king in name, but this is the true king.’ Hearing this, the young men said: ‘Then henceforth we shall write Prince Moon’s name under that of Dumba-dzin.’ And thus it began. But Brahmin Dumba-dzin grew angry, gathered the Brahmins, and declared: ‘This Prince Moon has usurped my authority and power; he must be killed, know this well.’ They replied: ‘You yourself devise a plan.’ Dumba-dzin said: ‘If the king recounts a dream to you, ask me about its meaning.’ One night, the king dreamed he was bound in another’s body and cast away in a wooden house. On waking, he asked the Brahmins its meaning. They said: ‘Ask Dumba-dzin, he knows the fruit of dreams.’ Dumba-dzin replied: ‘This dream is inauspicious. The Moon and another will cause the kingdom to decline or bring about death.’ The king, distressed, asked: ‘What means of remedy are there?’ Dumba-dzin answered: ‘O King, slay Prince Moon together with the other princes as an offering to the gods. Make a great pool of their blood. If you enter it, you will be freed from this harm.’ The king reflected: ‘If I survive, again there may arise a son of virtue.’ Thus he commanded the young men with iron rods…

The king ordered that Dumbu Zhinpa be bound and offered as a sacrifice. Seeing that Prince Dawa was absent, Dumbu Zhinpa said, ‘Without Prince Dawa, the offering is incomplete.’ So the king sent a messenger to summon him. Out of devotion to his guru, the prince obeyed and went along. The messenger, with a maid, came to the prince’s spring garden and reported the events. The attendants said to the prince, ‘All this is caused by Dumbu Zhinpa’s evil mind; he should be slain.’ The prince replied, ‘Indeed, I know his actions are wrong, yet I will calm my anger. If by this my father may live long, my death is meaningful. I shall go myself; do not be wrathful toward Dumbu Zhinpa.’ Thus he went before the king. He said, ‘If my father sends me to the offering, I rejoice.’ The king was moved. Dumbu Zhinpa, during the ritual, ordered the priests first to burn Prince Dawa as the offering, then said, ‘Do likewise with the others.’ The young men trembled, saying, ‘Dumbu Zhinpa is rich yet merciless. O noble prince, have you no compassion?’ The prince replied, ‘I abide in equanimity with a mind of compassion and loving-kindness.’ Instantly, their iron chains fell away. As they wondered, the gods, moved by divine power to cut off the evil karma, stirred the heavens. A thick storm arose, veiling the sun. Thunder roared; peaks crumbled. Iron rain fell, destroying all. Torrents quenched the sacred fire, burning the hair of the Brahmins. The iron hail struck and killed both the king and Dumbu Zhinpa. Hearing this, the queen too took her life. The palace was shattered; the realm’s beings perished in great number. Later, the bodhisattva cremated the bodies of his parents, lamenting, ‘Alas! Thus has the Blessed Buddha spoken.’

The Blessed One said: All things composed of the earth disintegrate in but a single instant and are impermanent—this is well spoken. At that time, the kinsmen of the Śākya clan, hearing these sorrowful words, became weary of the world and went to the forest of austerities. In the past, in a city called Śākya, there was a Dharma-possessed king named Golden-Tuft. When his noble queen was with child, the Blessed One himself took birth. By the power of dwelling in the womb, he inspired his mother’s thoughts toward virtue and bestowed wealth, and his mother also spoke the holy Dharma. The king performed many virtuous deeds, such as giving cool breezes to those tormented by suffering. At that time, the prince, endowed with a divine form, was born with a great jewel on his crown that shone like the sun. Many auspicious signs appeared, such as showers of celestial flowers. Merely touching the jewel on his crown could transform iron into gold and fulfill the aspirations of supplicants; thus he was named “Crown Jewel.” Later, when his father passed away, he became the youthful king. Like a wish-fulfilling tree, he fulfilled all the desires of his people and left none in poverty. This king possessed a great elephant guardian named Good Mountain and divine steeds with golden manes, along with heavenly riches and treasures. His queen was named Ground-Holder, and she was supremely beautiful. One day, a sage named Worldly Wealth, born from the Brahmin lineage, arrived leading a maiden like a goddess named Lotus Woman. He praised the king, saying: This beautiful woman was born from the womb of a lotus. I have raised her with the merit of the fire sacrifice. Please accept her as your consort. A son was born from her, named Crowned Lotus, endowed with courage, strength, and vast virtues. When the king made a great offering, the Brahmin disciples and the chiefs of the Kurus assembled, some finding it hard to endure. In the midst of the fire offering, the Lord of the Gods manifested in the form of a rākṣasa, begged for food of all kinds but did not accept them, saying: I live only on the fragrance.
