假使你加诸苦难，如今我也必以大力加害于你。——这是他所说的。欢喜天子心中思忖：若王日积来到此间，我之众生必将遭受痛苦，于是对侍臣说道：孩童啊！请你前去迎接我之师长等人，并代我转告：我自己也将前来。言毕，国王凭藉丰厚财富，率领大军，携持兵器，前往国土附近恒河岸边，命令奸臣罗难（恶心）道：我之祖先虽遇师长，仍极为傲慢，你也前去对他们说：‘汝极为尊贵，我绝不向你顶礼。’奸臣受命，遂对欢喜天子合词欺瞒说道：‘国王日积，请你恭敬而来。’欢喜天子不知惧畏，误以为天神在说，于是国王日积大为震怒。于是罗难又说道：‘欢喜天子十分软弱愚笨，神祇啊，他全然不能少许加害于你。’于是国王日积率领四军，怀着欲战之心，前往欢喜天子之军阵。此时欢喜天子则登上如天宫般的巨船，周围环绕着歌舞之众，在恒河水中嬉游、沐浴，继而于宴饮之时击鼓奏乐，其音轰然，如雷霆动地。国王日积震惊，问罗难曰：‘此为何事？’答曰：‘此鼓声乃欢喜天子备办天神筵宴，欲与天人同食共饮也。’日积心想：‘啊！如是功德之力，焉能使我与随众从高空坠下？必定是我等之军队忍辱具足。’于是国王日积怀疑恐惧，知晓欢喜天子定将以巧智制伏自己。众人也呼声道：‘如此你与我不和。若汝不与我和，我将舍弃忍辱，以烈火之顶烧杀于汝！’国王日积闻此言，遂惶惧不安。

If you bring about suffering, then I too shall, with great strength, bring harm upon you—that was what he declared. The Joyous Prince thought: “If King Rirab arrives here, my beings will fall into misery.” So he spoke to his attendant: “Child, go meet my teachers, and tell them that I myself will also come.” Having said this, King Rirab, with immense wealth, assembled his armies, bore weapons, and went to the bank of the Ganges near the king’s land. He commanded the minister Lönan (Evil Mind): “My ancestors, though meeting teachers, were exceedingly proud. You also must tell them: ‘Though you are most venerable, I will not bow to you.’” The minister, following orders, deceitfully told the Joyous Prince: “King Rirab, come with reverence.” The Joyous Prince, knowing no fear, thought it was the deity speaking, and King Rirab became exceedingly angry. Then Lönan said: “The Joyous Prince is very weak and foolish, O deity, he cannot harm you in the least.” Thereupon King Rirab, with his fourfold army, desiring battle, marched to the camp of the Joyous Prince. Meanwhile, the Joyous Prince boarded a great ship like a heavenly palace, surrounded by assemblies of singers and dancers. He played in the waters of the Ganges, bathed, and afterwards at the time of dining, drums were sounded, their tones booming like thunder shaking mountains. King Rirab was astonished and asked Lönan: “What is this?” He replied: “This drum sound is the Joyous Prince preparing divine banquets, wishing to feast together with the gods.” Rirab thought: “Ah! With such power of merit, could he cause me and my retinue to fall from the heights? Surely our army must be endowed with patience.” Thus King Rirab, full of doubt and fear, knew that the Joyous Prince would by skillful means subdue him. People also cried out: “Thus you act in discord with me. If you do not act in harmony with me, I shall abandon patience and slay you with the blazing summit of fire!” Hearing this, King Rirab was stricken with fear and alarm.

于是结成契合。那位名叫“欢喜之上”的王子来到帝释天居处（王宫须弥山处），如法供养礼敬，并以多种方式加以赞颂。欢喜之上王子又以法语开示彼处之人，使其安住于佛法之道，然后返回自己的城市。欢喜之上王子获得诸天威德财宝的因缘，是因为往昔曾为名叫“婆罗那斯（瓦拉纳西）婆罗门有根本者”之人，因病苦逼迫，向一位独觉佛求取药物并呈献香花之伞，以求清凉庇护，此乃业之异熟果报，而那位邪恶之大臣则是由天所赐的缘起，佛说如是。又于往昔之时，世尊自身在多种树木、鸟兽聚集、庄严美妙之林中化现为一头拥有六根长牙之大象王，率领象群，如白云般奇特。当时善加守护象子，并有名为“善女”与“极善女”的两头母象。某一时刻，天空中有持水之龙之声响，于彼虚空，有一极美小女及眷属围绕，以智持摄众生之手中，取出自未干之海所出黄金本性之莲花幢马旗叶大小、芳香遍布之物，出现在那林之山中，径直献到象王之前。象王取之，心想“先赐予谁呢？”遂将之赐给先到之善女。善女怀敬意以象鼻置于首上恭敬而立。后极善女来到，见其莲花，象群之主生起嫉妒，想“此女应赐，我不曾赐”便弃舍象王而他去，心乱不食草水。于是他在岩石中央结跏趺坐，见一位身披红色法衣之独觉佛，于是自大海中取出拘牟陀（香木）供养之。尔后那头母象便留在隐者之侧，心愿“以我供养独觉佛之善根，愿我来世转为王妃”，作如是愿。于是自己伸出舌头……

Thus they became in accord. The prince named “Joy Supreme” went to the abode of the king of the gods (Mount Sumeru of Śakra), offered worship in accordance with ritual, and praised him in many ways. Prince Joy Supreme also taught the Dharma there, establishing them in the path, and then returned to his own city. The cause for Prince Joy Supreme obtaining the splendor and wealth of the gods was that, in a past life, he had been a brāhmin of Bārāṇasī (Varanasi) called “Rooted One.” Tormented by illness, he requested medicine from a Pratyekabuddha and offered an umbrella woven with perfume to ward off heat and dust—this was the ripened fruit of that karma. And the wicked minister was said to be “god-given.” Moreover, in a past time, the Blessed One himself, in a forest adorned with diverse trees, birds, and beasts, manifested as a great elephant king with six tusks, lord of an elephant herd, wondrous like a white cloud. At that time he carefully protected the young elephants and had two female elephants named “Good” and “Very Good.” At one moment, from the sky came the sound of the water-holding dragon. In that sky, a small beautiful girl and her retinue, holding in their hands a natural golden lotus of the size of a horse’s banner leaf just emerged from the undried ocean, fragrant everywhere, appeared in that mountain of the forest and directly came before the elephant lord. He took it and thought, “To whom shall I give it first?” and so gave it to the first, “Good.” “Good” respectfully placed it on her head with her trunk and stood. Later “Very Good” arrived and, seeing the lotus, the lord of the herd gave rise to jealousy, thinking, “This girl should be given to; I did not give,” and thus abandoned the elephant king and went elsewhere, becoming agitated, not eating grass or drinking water. Then in the center of a rocky cliff, he entered meditation and saw a Pratyekabuddha clad in red Dharma robes, and from the ocean took up a kumuda (fragrant wood) and made an offering. Thereafter that female elephant remained by the ascetic’s side, vowing, “By this virtue of offering to the Pratyekabuddha, may I become the queen of a king,” and so aspired.
