Planted indeed! Wherever and in whatever life a Dharma-bearer may be born, may he always cultivate loving-kindness toward you—thus it was spoken. Thus, the Dharma-bearer is the Blessed One, while the non-Dharma-bearer is Śakra, Lord of the Gods. Even as the two-headed goose, so is this. Furthermore, at times when the son of a fisherman, skilled in eloquence, was born as the maidservant of the Sun King; or when two jewelers disputed over the value of gems; or when two sons of a householder; or when two sons of a brāhmaṇa—then too, the discord once held with Śakra should be viewed according to the three-hundredth section of the Vinaya. Again, in a former time, this Blessed One was born as the King of the Luḍaka. He was called King Generosity, weaker than former kings, constantly overshadowed in glory, made equal to enemies, yet the King of Luḍaka always kept a mind of loving-kindness. Once, King Generosity assembled four divisions of troops and marched to battle against the King of Luḍaka. The King of Luḍaka, though possessed of great strength and a mighty army, did not regard him as an enemy, but with a mind of kindness. He laid out a half-yojana road in three parts, adorned with ornaments, provided food and drink, prepared seats and offerings, summoned ministers and townsfolk, and received him. King Generosity, free from anger and envy, caused joy to the King of Luḍaka, turned back in thought, and went to his presence. The King of Luḍaka received him with great honor, fed him, and spoke: ‘Great King! Please forgive me. I will ever submit to you. I wish to be your friend, so please show me kindness.’ Hearing this, the King of Luḍaka replied: ‘With the arrow of patience, I have destroyed anger and pride. With your arrow of virtue, you too have shattered our doubts.’ Thus, the two inclined their minds toward each other, and King Generosity returned to his land. Again, in former times, this Blessed One was the king named Good Friend. At that time, a fierce god-king called Mighty came, gathering troops, intending to seize the dominion of Good Friend. Then Good Friend consulted with his ministers as to what should be done.

Asked, some said to muster courage, or to retreat; likewise, some said to give wealth, or how the ministers would accomplish it, or how the army would conquer; the city lord, the water god, rich and with much wealth, kind-hearted, said I will bestow whatever wealth, and dispel it with mantras. Like this they discussed, but they could not dispel the enemy king with wealth, and the army came. Then, King Kinsman mutually felt that their respective kingdoms were enough, and should please the gods. Life is short, and one will eventually go to the next life, knowing that just one portion of food, one garment, one bed, one wife is enough. The wise do not argue with others, even if a being has a mountain of gold, they will not be satisfied, but will increase their attachment to what they have gained. Friends, please consider for a moment, stop the fighting. The wise should cultivate contentment, after such persuasion, although they complied, they were overwhelmed by greed, unable to stop, and came with a message saying: If you kill me, my kingdom will be yours; if I kill you, your kingdom will be mine. At that time, King Kinsman thought, in whatever realm there is attachment, there will be suffering, if there are aggregates, the necessities of beings are needed, if there are no aggregates, they are not needed. So he gave up the throne, went forth to practice, cultivated the four Brahma abodes, and was born in the Brahma world. Again, in the past, countless inconceivable eons ago, the Buddha Vipashyin appeared in the world, and during the time when the image of his teachings existed, in the country of Varanasi, there was a great and just king, possessing excellent wisdom, ruling over sixty small kingdoms, he was the Bhagavan, reborn as a prince, named Endurance, brave in giving, and possessing great compassion. At that time, there were six angry, cunning ministers who always framed others for no reason, they were always jealous of the prince because of their own faults. At that time, the king fell seriously ill, and the prince served his father.
