Thus, relying on the power of the Bodhisattva, the roots and fruits of virtue flourished and were endowed with essence. Yet, when abandoning proper conduct and succumbing to desire, the wife clasped him tightly with both hands and feet, saying: “Your husband, having once been as though dead and now revived, if you act like this, it may endanger life itself.” Though she spoke thus, he did not cease, and repeatedly pressed upon her, unable to subdue his afflictions, and so lay with her. Thereafter, becoming deeply attached, even when summoned he did not return to his own wife. The man thought: “In conflicts, the quarrel of women is the most fierce. If it becomes known that I have engaged with this woman in lustful attachment, it will bring calamity, unavoidable.” He spoke thus. The wife thought: “This must be addressed with skillful means.” She wrapped herself in a head cloth and lay upon a rocky cliff. Later, carrying grass and grain, she returned and said: “I seek food.” When asked why, she pointed to a great rock near the cliff and said: “Once when my mind was faint, a physician showed that this rock could bring healing.” He replied: “Go and fetch the rock.” With skill, the woman tied a rope to the rock’s top, pushed it down, and cast it into the water. Carried by the water, it reached a certain king’s palace. At that time, the king of that land had died without a son, and the ministers decided: “One with merit and virtue should be enthroned.” They summoned diviners. Seeing the stone settled there, adorned like a jewel, the diviners said: “This is a sign of one endowed with merit; he should be placed on the throne.” Thus he was appointed king. When it was time to take a queen, the ministers of that land, together with kings of other regions and wealthy households, adorned their daughters with jewels and sent them. Though urged to accept, the king refused, for he was repelled by women, and rebuked them. At that time, because of what the woman had done, the household fell into ruin, and the roots and fruits withered; his power diminished, and in the end, he declined and perished.

There was a person whose legs and arms were incomplete, yet he bore his crippled body and traveled every path. When asked why he did not leave his household duties, he replied, “I do not leave my home and hearth.” Thus, she was brought before the king’s palace. People marveled and said, “Our king mocks all women, yet this woman, though maimed, does not forsake her household—we have never seen such a one.” This story reached the king, who, upon seeing her, was secretly amazed. When she arrived, the king smiled and said, “The flesh and blood of my body can be eaten and drunk, yet you, bearing a crippled frame, do not leave your household duties; even if struck by stones and cast out to the wilderness, you still carry your broken body and do not abandon your household.” Hearing these words, the woman felt deep shame and lowered her face. The ministers asked the king for the reason, and he explained in detail, saying, “By these words I drove this woman outside the city.” At that time, the young prince was in fact the Blessed Buddha himself, who declared, “This woman is a gift of the gods.” Long ago, on the shore of the great ocean, there were two beings sharing one body, one named Dharma-possessed and the other named Non-Dharma. When Non-Dharma was asleep, Dharma-possessed remained awake and found a fruit of ambrosia. He thought, “Should I awaken him to share this?” Again he thought, “Even if I awaken him, this is enough only for one body’s sustenance.” So he did not awaken him and consumed it alone. When Non-Dharma awoke and sensed that Dharma-possessed had obtained the ambrosia, he asked, “What is this that can heal?” Dharma-possessed replied, “This is the fruit of ambrosia which I have obtained.” Non-Dharma said, “You have acted wrongly, yet I too shall know the time.” When Dharma-possessed later fell asleep, Non-Dharma arose and saw a poisonous fruit carried by the water, ate it, and perished. Because of the poison, Non-Dharma became angry and vowed, “Wherever and whenever we are reborn, may I slay you, oppose you, and become your enemy.” This was the karmic cause from former times.
