The monkey king did bad things, and he also did bad things when he became a Buddha. Although he didn't feel it, the Blessed One, you used to love him like an only son in the past. Now that you have become a Buddha, what more needs to be said? Also, in the past, in a large forest with cliffs, when he became a monkey, a person got lost and was looking for the fruit of the Tindu tree to eat in that area. He climbed a tree and fell into a deep abyss that was very difficult to escape. When he was oppressed by inescapable sorrow, that monkey transported the fruit from the tree and practiced strength on the stones, rescuing that person from the cliff. Because of fatigue, he fell asleep on a stone. That foolish man promised to be a servant and lived there, thinking, "I escaped from loneliness. This monkey is very strong. If it wakes up, it will kill me. Before it wakes up, I will kill it." So he threw a large stone at the monkey's head. The corner of the stone hit the head, but not completely. His head was injured, and he jumped up and looked. The man was standing there in a panic, and he didn't see anything else. Thinking, "This is what he did," disregarding the pain I suffered, "He is doing bad things without considering kindness." So, with great compassion, his eyes filled with tears, he looked at him and said, "You became a human being but do such things, alas! If someone else harmed me, you should have stopped it. What is the point of ruining this life and the next in this way? Now I will send you to the vicinity of the village. Don't waste time. I will send you there, point out the road, and advise you to abandon sinful actions." Then he left. That person, because of the maturation of bad karma, became ugly, like a flesh-eating ghost. Wherever he went, he was driven away and lived near the forest. A king who hunted animals saw him and asked him. He told the story of being treated with ingratitude despite being compassionate. Also, in the past, a Bodhisattva became a bird called a Garuda. In that area, when the lion, the king of beasts, was eating meat, a bone got stuck in its mouth, and it was experiencing pain. That Garuda bird asked it.

From the ground, the lion saw a bone, awoke from its slumber, approached, pulled out the bone and said: “You are the king of beasts. Since you are able to bestow benefit, please aid me in due time.” The lion replied: “So it shall be.” At that time, a parrot had been seized by a hawk but escaped death, and being hungry said to the lion: “I am starving; you are eating meat, please grant me a small scrap.” The lion answered: “For you to come alive between my fierce fangs—is that not a great favor?” But the parrot replied: “Falling into the ocean and being cast out, dreams and thoughts are meaningless. Relying on what is destitute has no benefit. Doing what should not be done makes all action vain.” Thus speaking, it flew away, without anger or dispute. The lion was indeed divinely endowed. Again, in a former time, four princes each took wives. Those women plotted against the king. When the king knew, he expelled the four princes, who departed with their wives. As they went along the monastery road, hindered, they deliberated: “Let us kill our wives, and with their flesh and blood pave the path to cross into the monastery.” Among them was a prince named Saga, who thought: “Better that I give up my own life than take another’s.” He fled, and with his wife wandered, famished and without food. His wife said: “You should die.” But the prince thought: “I must protect her life, not let her perish.” So he cut his own flesh, let his blood be drunk, and led her step by step, sustaining himself with roots and fruits. At the foot of the mountain was a spring, where a man, cut of his hands and feet by enemies and cast into the water, cried out in pain. The prince, hearing the cries, was moved with compassion. He looked back, saw the man, pulled him from the water, and asked him what had happened. The man told his story. The prince fed him with roots and fruits, entrusted him to his wife for care, and by gradual treatment the man was restored. He became very intimate with the prince, speaking with him often. A bodhisattva by nature does not give rise to hatred through desire; even if sometimes troubled, it never endures long.
