If he seeks refuge in me, I will not abandon him. The tiger, being attached to flesh and blood, stayed there and soon departed. The bear said, "I am tired, you stay on the tree for a while, and I will rest." He fell asleep due to fatigue. The tiger said to the man, "How long will you stay here? Abandon the bear to me, and I will eat and leave. Then you can go as you please." The merciless one thought, "How long will I stay here? It is better to abandon this one." So he abandoned the bear from the tree. The bear said, "Alas! Evil-tongued one, what evil thoughts do you harbor in approaching a friend?" As he spoke, he fell and was killed by the tiger. The man heard these words and thought, "What does this one want to share with me? That is why he speaks like this." He was then infected by it, his mind became confused, and he wandered around madly, reciting from his mouth, as before, "Alas! Evil-tongued one," and so on. Even when his relatives took him away, he spoke in the same way. They consulted exorcists, monks, Brahmins, and friends, but they all gave different answers and could not understand it. At that time, in a forest not far from Varanasi, there lived a hermit with five supernatural powers. The relatives took the man to him and told him what had happened. The hermit said, "This sentient being is committing evil deeds. This evil-natured one abandoned the Bodhisattva, who benefits others, in front of the tiger. That great being thought of teaching the Dharma to this man. Therefore, when this man abandoned him to the tiger, he felt remorse and remembered each word and line from the ten verses, which is the 'Alas! Evil-tongued one,' and so on, as he said before." One of the hermit's disciples asked, "Master, what are those verses like?" The hermit said, "Alas! Woe is it! In this world, unrighteous deeds are unbearable. One should not sow discord among people. There are those who commit the act of killing a friend. One who kills a friend will not find happiness at any time or place, not on a cushion, not on the road, not while sitting, not while walking. Thus, with a compassionate heart, the words spoken to this man, he has truly harmed sentient beings."

O deluded mind! Just like flames blazing forth, consuming all, the karmic result is unbearably harsh, and it will cast you beyond this world into sensations of intense suffering, never finding peace. Even if you cry and lament, it will be utterly unbearable, and only cries of “Alas! Alas!” will be heard, while great torment will be obtained. O beast of evil deeds! What you have done has caused you to turn against companions, even to the point of killing them. The mind that destroys Dharma is surely a sinful mind. When you recall what you did to the bear and the tiger, you will realize, O foolish mind, how ignorant you were of the right way to act toward a friend. By killing, you incurred killing in return. Thus, fighters saw the great terror of the tiger, and though you had relied upon it for long, you did not guard it even while it slept, failing to preserve it. O foolish mind, your conduct is displeasing to friends, and those who speak Dharma all reproach it. When the deluded mind and body perish together, one will be reborn in the hell realms. Thus it was said: the bear was in truth the Blessed One, the Tathāgata, the Arhat, the perfectly awakened Buddha; and the man was one blessed by a god. Even when a Bodhisattva, born in the animal realm, meets the anguish of death, he may display such a manifestation, to make beings discern the true path from the false. Was it not precisely this that the Buddha taught? Knowing this, one should venerate with reverence. Furthermore, in ancient times, during the reign of King Tsangzin, a man went to the forest to cut wood, and was thrown by a lion into a pit. The lion itself fell in after him. A snake frightened a hare, and the hare fled, pursued for food, until both fell together into that pit. When they sought to harm one another in malice, the lion said: ‘I could subdue you all. But since we now suffer unbearable torment, this is no time to destroy one another. Let us remain still.’ Then, by the force of karma, a hunter came by that place, looked into the pit, and those within cried for help, saying, ‘Rescue us! Rescue us!’ The hunter then first pulled out the lion...
