After taking refuge, on the eighth day the rain ceased, and roots, seeds, and fruits flourished again. The man asked, “How should I answer you?” The bear replied, “If I do not reveal myself to him, that itself is the answer.” The man, accepting this, made a gesture of respect and departed. His family and others, seeing that the fierce unseasonal storm had killed many birds and animals, thought he too had died, and asked, “How did he not die?” He explained what had occurred. They then asked, “Can you show us the cave where the bear resides?” The man replied, “I will not return to the forest.” So they decided to compensate him with two-thirds of the meat from the bear they had slain, and he showed them the bear’s cave. They lit a fire at the cave, and the bear, scorched and suffering, felt regret without anger, and by the force of karma, died in contemplation. The remaining share of the meat, when offered to someone, caused the recipient to collapse and die before eating. Other hunters, abandoning their own shares, fled. In that place a man named “Yamatsenpa” and King “Tsangsin” also arrived. They took the bear’s hide and told the monks, “This was not an ordinary bear; it was a Bodhisattva of the Auspicious Aeon, worthy of offerings.” The king and his retinue piled fragrant wood, cremated the body, and built a stupa at that very place, adorning it with parasols and banners, and made regular offerings. Thus, all their acts became meritorious offerings. Later, a poor wood seller went into the forest to cut wood, and in that great forest a Bodhisattva had taken birth as a bear and dwelt there. The man, chased and attacked by a tiger, climbed a tree that was the bear’s dwelling. The bear saw him, and though greatly frightened, embraced and comforted him. The tiger, craving food, said to the bear: “Hey, Great One, these black-headed humans are useless. Abandon him here so I can devour him and depart.” The bear, moved by compassion, replied: “If many humans come seeking refuge, one should treat them with kindness. What need have Bodhisattvas for anything else?”
