Even the greater part of the impurity turned into a mind of faith. Alala, how wonderful! Thinking like this, not fearing death, but protecting the truth. Then the prince said: I have found good speech and made offerings, my heart is joyful, and I remember your kindness. Now that I have come here, take whatever you want! The Rakshasa said: The time for me to eat you is still to come, for now, speak well, I want to hear it. The Bodhisattva said: You are so cruel and without compassion, and have temporarily become like this just for the sake of your stomach. These verses only proclaim the Dharma, and the Dharma and non-Dharma are incompatible. What is the use of showing the noble path to those who are even worse than Rakshasas? The Rakshasa mocked, and in response said: Kings kill pitiful fawns for fun, so if killing people for survival violates the Dharma, does killing deer not violate it? The Bodhisattva said: Those who kill deer are not abiding in the Dharma, but eating human flesh is even worse than that. People of high caste should not eat human flesh. Although he mocked with harsh words, the Bodhisattva suppressed his anger with the power of loving-kindness, and as if hearing those words, he smiled and said: I let you go, return home to enjoy the king's enjoyment and happiness, and then come back to me. Are you not skilled in the principles of law? The Bodhisattva said: I am not attached to immediate happiness, and I have abandoned the evil principles of only looking to protect myself. Coming here to protect the truth is what it means to be skilled in the principles of law. This principle does not contradict fame and true meaning. Evil principles contradict each other, and those who abide by them will die and go to the lower realms. The Rakshasa said: Abandoning a poor life, a family full of tears, and the happiness of the throne, what meaning did you see in the words of truth that you came here? The Bodhisattva said: Truth has many special qualities. To put it simply, truth is the most excellent of all ornaments, and of all tastes,

Among all words, the words of truth are the sweetest. Even if one has not practiced the arduous paths of asceticism that subdue afflictions, by speaking truth one accomplishes merit, spreads fame, and benefits all beings. Truth is the path beyond the three realms; it is the gate that leads into the celestial abode; it is also the bridge that liberates from the ocean of cyclic existence. Having spoken thus, the demon praised: “Excellent!” Yet, seeing another brought under my power, his life waning, he trembled with fear and thought: “You are a fearless hero, unmoved by fear of death.” The prince replied: “Even with great effort, death cannot be altered; what benefit is there in fear? Others who do not practice virtue and commit evil, at the time of death fear arises from such causes. As for myself, I do not recall committing evil deeds that cause regret; abiding in Dharma, performing giving and virtue, my mind is at ease, and I do not fear death. Therefore, you may take food or offering as you wish.” The demon, moved, gave rise to faith, tears falling as he forgot his malicious mind, and gazed at the prince: “O noble one, who could harm one such as you? Speak well to me, I wish to listen. By your good words I have become remorseful and abandoned wicked ways.” The Bodhisattva prince said to the demon: “In the past you fulfilled the austerities of a sage, and now at this time of Dharma assembly, you are suited to arouse aspiration toward the Dharma. If you desire Dharma, you must follow the corresponding way: dwell in humble position, generate the glory of discipline, look with joyful eyes, drink the nectar of words, generate reverence, bow with single mind, develop pure faith, listen as the sick to a healer’s words, gradually progress and hear the Dharma.” Then the demon stretched forth his leg, placed the prince upon a high rock, seated him there, and said: “Great one, please speak to me a verse.” The Bodhisattva then clearly uttered the stanza he had previously heard: “O noble one, reply to me with but one word: as one desires, one may encounter; but never act contrary to reason.”

It must be so, and it will become supremely stable. The lame man, upon hearing this, said: “Excellent!” Then he bowed his head, tied up his little black horse, and joyfully said: “Please speak again to the Bodhisattva.” The Bodhisattva then uttered the second verse: ‘The noble ones cannot be destroyed by anyone; with the conduct of patience one should rely on virtue. Near to them, even without a special request, one inevitably acquires a dust of their qualities.’ The lame man said: ‘Well spoken, virtuous one; you have offered in every way, wealth has been given, and through striving the goal is achieved. Say another verse.’ The Bodhisattva said: ‘The king’s chariots, adorned with jewels and gold, will still decay, and the body ages and becomes unpleasant. The Dharma of the noble ones does not decay, and the virtues of the good remain firmly followed.’ The lame man, leading the little black horse, made an offering as though drenched in the rain of nectar. Then again the Bodhisattva uttered the fourth verse: ‘Between the sky and the earth is vast; between the far and near shores of the ocean is vast; between the mountains of the east and west is vast; but between the profane things and the holy Dharma is vaster still.’ Hearing this, the lame man rejoiced greatly and respectfully said to the Bodhisattva: ‘These four verses, with clear meaning, I will make into offerings of the four sacred gifts; please accept whatever you wish.’ The prince said: ‘Do not force yourself into doing what is unworthy, losing your autonomy, for then virtuous practice will turn into its opposite. How can you give the sacred things properly to others? If I say “I will give the sacred,” though you give them, your mind will not be joyful, so do not say such words.’ The lame man then felt a little ashamed, lowered his head and said: ‘Do not harbor such doubts. Even if I must give up my life, I will offer these sacred things.’ The Bodhisattva said: ‘True asceticism means abandoning killing, not imprisoning beings, not violating these principles. Brave one, you must completely renounce eating meat, and thus make offering with these four supreme sacred gifts.’ The lame man said: ‘The first three sacred things I will offer to you, and the last…’
